Subject: Has anyone had knee arthroscopy for a medial tear/arthritis?

Hi everyone,I had knee arthroscopy 10 days ago after years of being told I had arthritis and an eventual MRI scan showed a medial tear in my inner knee. The surgeon found grade 2 arthritis which is mild, and cleaned it up but couldn't repair the complex tear, as I expected. The problem is after 10 days I feel no better than before and the pain is 10 times worse than before and I can't walk yet without a limp. I have some arthritis in my other hip, which I've managed with for several years, but now is becoming worse along with the knee because they are having to take the strain.
Does anyone know how long it will take to see if my knee has improved? I didn't see the surgeon after the op so got to wait another 4 weeks to see him. I'm an active person, was walking up to 9 miles a week and working full time before the knee was too painful to continue last June. If I end up having to have a TKR will I beable to resume the walking I'm used to? I'm 53, generally fit and not overweight. Thanks in advance.

Hi Jackie, I have arthroscopy 9 weeks ago for torn meniscus. I was told when I saw the consultant 6 weeks after the operation that I have grade 4 osteoarthritis and he took all the torn meniscus out. I wish I had not had it done. My pain is far worse than before surgery, I have a worse limp than before and my knee is very unstable. I also cannot straighten my knee when I lay flat. Before the operation I had pain and didn't walk too well but it was nothing compared to what I am going through now. The consultant is talking about a total knee replacement. Best Wishes, Gillian

Oh that's awful and so disappointing for you.
Mine is grade 2 osteo and they only trimmed the tear. I can make my leg straight but still limping and difficulty doing the exercises.I will have to wait to see what the consultant says.
My dad had a TKR at age 80 and now has no pain and walks a mile each day.

Good to hear about your dad. Amazing at that age. I had an MRI scan in February and as well as confirming the badly torn meniscus it just confirmed mild generative changes. Then when I go to theatre I am told my knee is very bad with grade 4 changes. I don't understand why it happened so quickly. Let me know how you get on when you see the consultant. Best Wishes, Gillian
