Subject: First rheumatology appointment..

I've had my appointment brought forward after going to the doctors with my hands cramped up for well over a day and being unable to move them (thank goodness) I was given steroid tablets but now the course is over my hands are ceasing up again in the mornings. I was just wondering what I can expect in my first visit with the doctors? Thank you in advance :)

Hi Bekki, It probably varies. I was admitted to hospital on my first appointment as I was so ill. The doctor could see as I tried to walk that I was really bad. I got a steroid jab and they took fluid off my knee and a steroid injection in that. I had blood tests and was sent for X-rays. Hopefully, you will have just the latter and not the former.

Bekki , are you positive for Rheumatiod Factor , it dont matter much , just makes it easier to get a diagnosis of RA , cant remember much about my first one as it was nearly 20 years ago , they was conplaining I was taking steriods & stopped them & started a drug called Sulfasalazine , they may give you a steriod injection to help until these drugs kick in

dont worry , most these doctors are realy nice & the Rheumatiod Nurses will help you loads over the years

Thank you so much for your comments! Yes I'm positive rheumatoid. I'm so relieved that my appointment isn't far away now, I'm just looking forward to getting into a routine and try and ease my hands and shoulders. Thank you both again

Hi Bekki, I typed out a message earlier for you but it must have got lost somewhere. Don't worry too much about the appointment, like yourself I was desperate to be seen. They will have a good look at your joints and possibly xray them and take some blood tests and like Colin has said they will start you on something that will help and maybe give you an injection to help until the tablets kick in. Good luck xx

Bekki, sometimes I make a list of everything I want to discuss with them. Aches pains the what if's how long before i should see results. Tell them all about the pain stiffness when it's worst. I always used to come out and say Oh I forgot to ask this and that.
I find it helps otherwise we get caught up in everything they say and not what we want to say.
Take care.
