Subject: Sulfasalazine and folic acid
Hello. I have rheumatoid arthritis and recently stopped taking my methotrexate because of bad side effects on stomach/digestion/bad-taste-in-mouth etc. I am considering trying sulfasalazine which I was prescribed a while back but never started. I can't recall if I am meant to take folic acid with this in the same way as with mtx. (I assume as there was a plan for me to be on both medications that this is ok?)Can anyone let me know if this is normal procedure?
I am also a bit confused about the role of folic acid with regards to side effects as I've found different drs/nurses to say different things.

hi Beth , dont stop/start taking any meds without talking to your rheumy nurse , with the problems you are having they can put you onto methotrexate injector pens , you wont get the problems you mentioned stomach/digestion/bad-taste-in-mouth etc. how much folic acid they giving you ? & as Denise said you dont need it with sulpha

I'm on a waiting list to learn to do the injections. I had one appointment but I couldn't face it on the day but I'm going to try again. I have talked to drs/nurses about medication decisions. I was meant to take folic acid 6 days a week with Mtx but I took it less than that which I had discussed with the nurse. The most recent dr I saw said folic acid was the best thing re side effects, others have said that evidence doesn't show you need it at all. I find it hard to monitor and track the effects on my body over time. Thanks for the info.

beth I take 6 tablets a week because of problems with my liver & now have 25mg meth without side effects as for the injections , was it the new pens they was going to give you or the needels , the pens are so easy to use , I could not do the needels myself & went back on the tablets
