Subject: Re: Fasting (Ramadan Festival)
Hi Suz I've read so many medical papers about this - it's been in the medical literature since at least 1924 - when physician John Turnbull did elimination diets with 100s of RA sufferers - it's all but ignored by 95% of "doctors". He was helping people for over 20 years - and his studies are all there to be read by today's docs. Dr. Gail Darlington cites his research in her 1986 studies in to elimination diets. Fasting helps me, eating less helps me, eating less carbs helps me - but I have AS not RA. Eating no wheat or corn and less dairy has helped me for over 20 years. Best searches online for anyone interested are - - Vojdani rheumatoid arthritis - Barbara Allen rheumatoid - Alessio Fasano - Larry Smarr human biome project http://www.wesupportandywakefield.com/documents/ImmunGlutSenBeyond.pdf When you eat differently, the intestinal bugs "flora" change and its now pretty clear that our genes are not all that dictate our health - these bugs help signal which genes are active and inactive and how our immune systems react. Only a small percentage of people with the HLA-DR gene get RA - same with celiac for HLA-DQ gene. What I find fascinating about Turnbull was that he identified that some patients reactions changes to different foods after elimination. In todays terms to me this highlights a leaky gut "intestinal permeability" where the immune system is constantly challenged by all proteins and lectins. Some foods (gluten, nigella seeds) & bacteria can cause intestinal permeability. Some can improve permeability. The exposure our guts get leads to chaos as to which bugs thrive or die. Btw - I think NSAID are a true double edge sword - great for immediate pain but punctures holes in our guts and makes us all sicker in the long run. have avoided any painkiller now (even for headache) for over a year. I think we are at least 5 years aways from the point this feeds through to mainstream
