Subject: coming off Sulphasalazine

Hi, I have a terrible red itchy rash all over my arms, round my neck and top of my feet, but its not due to sun as I always cover up since being on sulpha. G.P. has taken me off sulpha because he says it is one of the side effects.

I did notice that an Australian piece say it was a well known side effect, might be me but I never noticed that said on any of my info leaflets.

I have been on it now for about 9 months. Just wondered if anyone knew how long is it before one starts to notice any difference coming off it? (that sounds posh doesn't it!!)

I am still on plaquenil, mtx and folic acid. Plus I am off my steroids totally now and my g.p. also took me off anti inflammatory - so my tablet box is looking quite empty at moment, which is nice.

I am waiting to go onto my antibiotic protocol treatment but at moment I feel okay, although I do know my fingers have got damage in the middle joint.

any help is appreciate.
Julie

I have had to come of Sulpha a couple of times because of high liver tests. They got back to normal within a week or two.

thanks Bsk, will just have to wait and see what happens although its been a few days now and my arms are still red and itchy, seems to get worse at it gets nearer bed time.

Not had bloods done for a few weeks so don't know if anything is showing there, I might ask for one done it cant harm, plus I always like to know what my crp is doing - how sad am I.

thankyou once again for reply, it seems very quiet on here at moment, hopefully its because everyone is feeling a bit better.

Have you taken an anti histamine?

yes I did use anti histamine, g.p. said to take before bedtime. It is going off now real slowly, not as itchy either. I look like I have got rhino skin on my arms, yeuk. I have been off sulpha now for nearly week, my hands are fine, in fact I have stood for 3 hours this morning ironing, I have no redness, no swelling no pain so I don't know what is going on.

Long may it last. Perhaps the sulpha has some kind of half life effect and stays in your system but not to the full amount. Who knows!
