Subject: Grandchild injections

Hi, Just a bit of info needed if anyone can help.
My grandson is 2 months old and just had his first injections ( diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio and Haemophilus influenzae type b known as Hib ), I'm on 15mg Methotrexate injections and I heard somewhere that I should avoid contact with anyone who had live vaccinations, is this true? and does it involve not being able to hold my grandson?

Morning Karl

Not heard this one. As far as I know, live vaccines should be avoided for yourself whilst on mtx and if you come into contact with chicken pox and haven't had it then it could pose a problem. My grand kids had chicken pox a while back so I checked with GP, said I had had it but didn't really know the answer but at the end of the day chicken pox is contagious before the spots come out so not much you can do about that one anyway.

Tetanus is not a live vaccine. I got alarm bells from the rheumy nurse having been bitten by a dog recently and gone to GP's nurse for a booster as mine was out of date. Told nurse meds I was on and she said fine. Rheumy nurse checked and it is not a live vaccine so no problems.

All I can say is that I have been around my grandkids when they have had their immunisations, hugs, cuddles the lot but if you are concerned, perhaps you should check it out with your rheumy nurse.

Hi Denise,
Thanks for the reply I just think I'll risk it as I thought it was weird what I'd heard.
My Rheumy nurse did tell me I couldn't have live vaccines and avoid people with chicken pox if I hadn't had it, but I told her I don't know if I have had Chicken pox or not so I've got to talk to my GP about a test to find out.
