Subject: help please.

So I have posted before but will give a breif summery its been a long journey fot me spanning now two years since my last 3rd pregnancy where I had preclampsia a joint in my finger became swollen a couple of months about after my child was born the doc said it was nothing but pain progressed to all fingers wrists ankles elbows shoulders knees a blood test by gp showed negative rumatoid factor but was referred to rumatologist who said not to read anything into the negative rumatoid factor result she sent me for xrays on my feet and did extensive bloods two months ago I still havent got results for these as will get them when I see rumatologist again for diagnosis but had the ultra sound on hands today as wad booked, although my hands werent bad today they found inflammation in some of the joints in them, does this confirm its ra? Will I finally get a dianosis for this cronic pain from this result? And get the medication to stop it causing permanent damage? Any one? Does the fact they found the inflammation give the diagnosis? Xx

Hi Mum, Often Rheumatoid arthritis is diagnosed with a clinical examination, that just means that they look at all your symtoms and decide. Blood tests help to confirm it but not everyone with RA has a positive factor. If you have Sero negative RA it usually means it won't be as severe. I have heard it can happen after a pregnancy, I think hormones are connected in some way to RA among other things. It is good that the rheumatologist has done all the tests and so frustrating for you that you have to wait so long for results. Perhaps if you called the hospital and explained how you feel they may get you in quicker and they could give you a steroid injection to tide you over until the medication starts to work if you have RA. Inflammation can be caused by many things but obviously something is going on when you are having lots of pain and hopefully the tests will give them some idea along with your symtoms. Good luck x

No, you can have inflammation with both sero negative and sero positive RA but best wait and see what the results show, if anything. There are many different types of arthritis so it may not even be RA and if it is it can be treated.
