Subject: New to this

I'm a 34 year old mother of two and have RA. Both ankles, both knees, both hands and wrists and left shoulder, had the worst 11 week of my life. I seen the consultant for the 1st time on Friday and he wants me to start on methotrexate and hydrochloroquine. I've done lots of googling over the weekend and methotrexate quite frankly scares me, I would like to know if anyone else has taken it and their views please, I'm really stuck and feel quite alone, hence to why I'm writing this, never been on a forum in my life but RA has completely took over mine and my family's life, thank you xx

Hi Nichola, methotrexate scared the life out of me too, as does the rest of the stuff they give us, but they are trying to halt the desctruction that RA causes and if they treat it aggressively in beginning apparently it is better. Most of us on here are on or have had mtx and hydrochloroquine which is known as plaquenil (hope I got that right) plus loads of other stuff, but please don't be frightened there is a lot of help and great advice that will be given on here by people far cleverer than me, and you will never be alone.

You sound like me you google everything and scare the life out of yourself, I then come on here and somebody will always put my mind at rest. I cant imagine coping with children having RA, mine are grown up, not that they help any, luckily my husband is brilliant helping me when the pains are too much.

It took me about 6 weeks before the mtx kicked in but they might give you a steroid injection which will ease things for you.

I myself take tramadol for pain now I have come off daily steroids. Like you my pain was first in my ankles, knees but now it is mainly in my wrists and fingers but things can get better so please don't think this is what the rest of your life will be like.

Listen to your rheumy, and nurses and read other posts on here, even typing in methotrexate in the search bar I am sure will give you some reassurance. Don't forget you wont be forced to take the meds, but they will help.

Take care Nichola, know you are on a good friendly forum and keep checking your posts and I am sure somebody else will come along shortly.

hi Nichola , been on methotrexate since 1998 & now on 25mg a week , I dont get any side effects from it but know some people do , folic acid helps with the side effects & take 5mg tablet six days a week .

RA all about trying to protect your joints & if you are having so much problems already you need strong drugs & you need to try two of these drugs before they are allowed to try one of the biologics

Hi, thank you for your replys, I was going to ask to be put on sulphasalazine but I've decided to go with the mtx first and see how I get on, I suppose there's risks with everything and I might be ok with it x
