Subject: Hello. New here
Hi I am new here and have RA. Currently on MXT and Hydroxychloroquine. In the middle of a flare at preent which is making me feel awful but I have terrible mid back pain which is worrying me. I am on Co-codamol and now on MST but neither seem to be helping much. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar? I saw my GP as I can't work at present and he just shrugged and said that it's all part and parcel of RA. I have had a good look around varying sites but a lot seem to say that RA largely doesn't affect the spine. Would be grateful for your opinions. I do hope you are all as well as you can be.

hi Heather welcome to the forum , there is some places that RA dont normaly affect like back & hips , told by my old consultant that you dont get RA in your hips but mine did & put me in hospital earlier this year with it . how long you had RA & are you sero-positive ( have Rheumatiod factor showing in your blood ) , and have they mentioned trying any of the biologics along side the other RA drugs as for your back , try to get some physo , our GP lets us have physo with private firm as we have to wait couple months at the local hospital or use a TENS m/c

Hi Heather welcome, I get mid back pain at times. When it come it lasts a few weeks and then goes. I just take it as part of the disease. Because it is not constant with me I tend not to seek advice as my other joints are worse. Mine is at waist level and right in the middle. Hope yours passes soon. X

Hi Heather :-) Very sorry to hear of your pain. I have had inflammatory arthritis (RA - but no ra factor in my blood - so sero negative) for four years and definitely have pain in my spine - mostly in the shoulder blade area. I have also read and heard before that RA doesn't normally come in the spine but mine definitely has - and at its worst it was definitely in my hips too :-((( I have to take morphine, steroids and celebrex (alongside an antibiotic protocol minocycline) to try to manage my illness) but it is always a 'balancing act'. Co Codomol did nothing for my pain unfortunately - only the morphine has - not sure what MST is?? Please don't suffer with the pain - yes we will always have pain with the awful illness - but it should be bearable. Take great care xx

I have Lupus/RA. I have never had a problem with my back until six months ago. Initially I was diagnosed with a torn muscle, and then sciatica. As I was getting worse, my GP sent me for a hip x ray. The pain in was my lower back, buttocks and thigh. It seems I have advanced osteoarthritis in my left hip and need a full hip replacement. You can have osteoarthritis along with RA. My mother had both forms of arthritis. It's only since the x ray I've been given morphine like Patricia. Hopefully I won't have to take it for too long. Trouble with doctors Heather, they can't feel what you feeling.
