Subject: 20 year old 5 years with JRA currently osteo in ankle

Left ankle bone on bone. Had external fixator and stem cell replacement therapy to grow cartlidge. One year post op recent x-ray shows bone on bone again. Constant pain and limping when walking. Curretnly on Enbrel which is working; no flare ups. Not sure where or what I can do for my ankle. Was told I am too young for ankle replacement and do not want a fusion.

hi Elizabeth , fell sorry for you , dont think of it as osteo as any arthritis with that amount of damage is the same

ankles are complicated joints , the main ankle joint can be replaced , they have improved it with http://www.staranklereplacement.com/ , you need a realy good consultant regardless what you have done to it

what you need to find out is it the main ankle joint or the small joints in the lower ankle/heel which cant be replaced & have to be fused , they can give you injections into these joints under xray to find out ,

myself had triple ankle fusion on both ankles (Triple arthrodesis is the opperation) & at some point need both main ankles fused

you could ask them to make a ankle support which will help short term & will then find out what its like to have the joint immobilized , only warning I would give is that I left one of my ankles to long before getting it fused & you can get a lot more complication with it

Hi Elizabeth, I'm 35 and had my ankle fused 4 years ago after choosing that rather than replacement. I've had JRA since I was 11 months old. If you have any questions please ask, I can always give you my email. I wouldn't change my decision and although it was a hard long recovery (it took me 11 months to get back to work) the difference in pain the day after surgery was amazing and I only took ibuprofen. Don't let anyone tell you you are too young for treatment, what are we supposed to do, sit on the sofa in pain till we hit 55?!? Ask to be referred to specialist tertiary clinic such as Wrightington for second opinion. You do not have to put up with it, there is hope!

Hi ankle sufferers.
I saw a surgeon this week and was told my ankle had fused on the side below the big bone but my main ankle joint is still bending so he said I could have a replacement then went on about infection and sometimes they have to be re done.
He said Hips replacements were very good, knees not as good as hips but ankle were the worst .
So I am just having an injection under xray for now to see if it helps.
Think I got scared.
So will review after the injection, if it helps.
I do hope so.
Pleased to read about your experiences. Thanks

hi Emm , dont worry about the injections , atleast under xray they will get it in the right place , they can put a pain killer in there at the same time so you will know how the joint feels after a opperation on it but total recovery is about 6 months
