Subject: Split nails

Does anyone else's nails split with either RA or the medication? My nails are all splitting and some half way down the nail which makes it too sore to cut. So annoying as they catch onto everything. Also wondering if anyone knows of a safe supplement that can be taken along with mtx etc to help this.

Hi Rhona

I spoken to you before as we both had rituximab infusions at one point same time, from your other threads I read that your ankles are swollen and I have to say mine were as well after the infusions and I think its do with rituximab getting rid of the Nasty B cells and this accumulates in body and can end up as fluid retention in the ankles to get rid of this drinking lots of water and also I tried taking pure Aloe vera juice which thank God cleared up the ankle puffiness.

Hopefully Aloe Vera Should not cause any interactions with Mtx as long you do not take it same time and this should help your split nails as Aloe Vera contains a lot of amino acids and minerals to generate and repair cells of nail structure and bones.

But please read about Aloe Vera before you decide to take it.

Hi Suz,

Thanks for your reply. Does aloe vera not taste horrible? I might give it a try and see if it helps although I find it easier taking pills than fluids.

How are you doing now? are you still on the rituximab? I have had three courses of it now and it has helped me a lot although my ankles feel like they are broken at times, they aren't puffy but the ankle bone looks out of shape now and much bigger looking, perhaps it is swollen.

I remember you were going to start leflinomide the last time we spoke, has it helped you?

Take care. xx

Hi Rhona,

The Aloe vera juice does not taste bad as you think the processing of the plant takes all the bitterness away and your left with a refreshing juice with Goodness..:)

Answer to your question I haven't taken the leflunomide my last infusion with RTX was last feb and since then I been suffering from a ulcer on the leg and still hasn't healed so not to get any infection set in the wound, Im not on any medication at the moment just paracetamol when I need it.

If your ankle looks outta shape you should contact the rhumy team rhona, Altho my right ankle isn't quite the same as the left. Is it your right ankle?

About your split nails you could take Calcium and magnesium supplement in combination it shouldn't interfere with MTX.

All the best

xx

Hi Rhona,
My nails split also and they don't split across the nail but down from the top.
The best thing I do is cut it as short as poss and then paint on the clear liquid nail hardner that works for me.

But if like me you forget to do it with the nail hardner it breaks again. But every two weeks should do it. Deb.

Hi Suz,

I must give it a try then, I believe it has other benefits too and also get the calcium and magn. supplement. That's not good that you've had an ulcer on your leg, was that caused with the rituximab? Both my ankles are sore but the left one looks worse.

Thanks Deborah, I usually use nail polish on my nails but I will get some nail hardener too as they do feel very soft and break very easy.

Take care xx

Rhona, do check with rheumy before you take any supplements. Some of them can be toxic to the liver if you are on mtx.

Rhona

The leg ulcer was caused by low circulation in my legs as prior to that I had Hip Replacement and I wasn't walking as much. RTX may have caused the slow healing of it but not necessarily caused the ulcer.

Take Care xx

P.s YOU can always visit your GP about your nails and see what they advise

Oh that sounds sore Suz, I hope it's healing now. You have enough to contend with when you have RA and you say you are off all medication. You are doing well if you can get by on just paracetamol. Take care and thanks again. xx

Not splitting as such but my fingernails seem to be coming away from the sides of my fingers so they split across really low down which can be painful - I figures maybe the swelling pulling them away?

I also have toenail issues. I had to have nail surgery on both big toenails last year as they were involuted then went ingrown so had both sides of both big toenails removed.

I've got other nail issues still though, some grow at a weird angle, almost diagonal and are going involuted, not sure I could face more nail surgery yet though!

It wasn't bad, just the whole faff of the aftercare as was having to go get it looked at a couple of times a week at podiatry as it initially had issues healing, not helped by taking steroids, and had to have it dressed for a coupel of months (self done afer the first week or so though).

Hi Eve, That sounds quite painful. I have lots of vertical lines in all my nails. I think you are right, both inflammation and the drugs seem to affect them. x

Hi Rhoda

I have vertical ridges on my nails. Read somewhere that it was a lack of something but my daughter's friend has just started nail gels and said that on the course she did, ra is a cause. I have quite strong nails so I have started buffing the ridges off. The gel is brilliant though, lasts several weeks and doesn't chip easily, even copes with the little bit of gardening I can manage.

Yes, I have read that too Denise. What is the gel, is it like false nails?

Hi Rhoda

It is like nail polish but is set under an ultra violet light. Not cheap and has to be taken off with some special solution but great for special occasions. Had mine done as a treat for Mother's Day and they are still looking good. Dxx
