Subject: cold after cold

Hi, I was diagnosed with RA last July (aged 27) apart from 2 flare ups, I have been relatively mobile and able to work, exercise etc.. however I have had 4 colds since December.
It is getting me so down as i have an extremly phsyical job and rely on my well being. Not to mention how lowsy you feel when you are ill.
Anyone else feel they have a weakend immune system since starting their medication? Anyone any suggestions ? Thanks x

hi karen, yea most of us if not all feel shattered, exhausted, prob due to the meds, but mine is I know due to the illness, I have Reiters, and like many conditions, they cause Fatigue... my immune system is totally compromised due to methtrexate and the Enbrel injections, was told they infact Stop the Immune working,so I guess we will get the Extra colds, more flare ups etc... no suggestions im afraid, except, try and rest when u can

take care

Hi karen: sorry to hear you've been feeling poorly. 50 hours does seem a lot of hours for a person who is totally fit and well, let alone anyone with RA - is there no flexibility in your work for a few less hours? If not, have you tried Echinacea, you get it from Boots. It's supposed to be good for colds I believe. Barbara

Hi Karen,
I wondered if you'd had steroids prior to this succession of colds as these do suppress the immune system . If steroids haven't been taken then it can only be down to the disease and the amount of hours you work. Your body probably needs to rest. I need to rest just thinking about 50 hours work! I don't know many healthy people who can work 50 hrs a week and it not affect their body in some way. Slow down, your body is telling you to. By the way i'm new to the forum and i'm sorry to barge in like this. Take good care, Heidi

Hi Barbara, actually one of my staff brought me a bottle of echinacea a few weeks ago, although i have only taken it a few times, i am going to make a consious effort to take it into work and take regularly now that you have mentioned it. Do you take it yourself?

Hiya Heidi, the only time I had steroids was in July when i had my first flare, I hear what you are saying regarding my working hours i know they are heavy, but that is my contracted hours, although my work have lightened the load (not as much physical work) and i can chose which hours i work, not early morning etc.. they have been good with me, unfortunately there isnt an awful lot of movement in terms of hours :( thanks for your reply xx

Hi Karen: No, haven't taken echinacea personally but I know quite a few people, including my sister, who have and think it works for them so good luck with it.
