Subject: Interesting Post in Celiac.com regarding other foods!

http://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/topic/22698-why-is-my-arthritis-getting-worse/

"I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, in almost every joint in my body, at age 32 - THAT was way too young. I had to eliminate almost everything from my diet - gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, red meat, poultry, beans, peanuts, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and several other things. Actually, all I ate for a year was fish, most kinds of vegies, sunflower seeds, rice and fruit. Within 5 days of that diet I started feeling much better and after a year I felt well enough to start adding foods back. I still avoid gluten, dairy (except for occasional butter and raw goat cheese), soy and eggs. Today I am arthritis-free, although if I eat dairy and soy one toe will start to ache and I get extra careful.

You might have to eliminate more than just gluten too"

Hello Sean, do you know if rheumatoid arthritis causes nail pitting, like it does in psoriatic arthritis ? Ive been diagnosed with RA but have noticed tiny pin prick marks on my nails that look just like the reference photographs of psoriatic arthritis.

Thanks Sean.
Hi May, pitting (of the nails) is an indication of PA. There isn't much difference it seems to me in the treatment of either disease.

I also have problems with dairy, but I find dairy much harder to eliminate than gluten.

Hi May
I believe that any foreign protein (dietary or bacterial) that the body comes to recognise as similar to your own tissue can cause or exacerbate arthritis and Casein protein from dairy (especially cows milk) is often cited as one if those.
My belief if that it is different bacterial triggers for different forms of arthritis - and dietary triggers leaking through add to the confusion causing the immune system to make anti-bodies.

I have a problem with dairy but seem to tolerate the proteins in goats and sheeps milk / yogurt better. Creamy puddings completely flare my eyelids and cause me dry skin - so not my bones but the same mechanism - just a different tissue.

There are parts of my earlier pre-diet change arthritis pain (shoulders and shoulder blades) that never come back - and I am sure that this is because I have removed some of the offending proteins

I'm slowly learning my lesson with cow dairy - there's only so many times I can keep having horrible red flared eyes!

As Linda says its hard especially if you are already giving up other foods - deserts are difficult but I (and my wife and daughter) have been using rice flour to make loads of pizzas, cakes and brownies.

Linda - for me gluten (including corn is the big one (no more forever!) but a hot summers days will probably have me reaching for an ice cream :-)) I've been using a set sheeps milk yogurt in place of cream at home though ....

I also use goats milk and goats butter, especially for white sauces Sean. I use soya milk in coffee, apparently anything with protein in it will whip up a froth for cappuccino, although it tastes awful in tea.

Like you, no more gluten for me. I am becoming adept at gluten free cooking and my husband can't tell the difference. I think we eat better gluten free, because we end up cooking everything from scratch. I haven't seen sheeps milk yogurt. I will look out for that.

Linda - the sheeps milk yoghurt is Woodlands Farm from Waitrose or Sainsburys and the other thing about it is that it has a different bacteria balance to other yoghurts as it doesn't contain any bifidis - in fact it is similar yoghurt to that described by the SCD - Diet for Crohn's disease.
