Subject: physio

I went to physio today and was given a stick .. I know I need it ,as the physiotherapist says - I walk better with it.... but I feel pretty much defeated .. I've spent over 10years fighting RA and this feels so final - I appreciate that I'm being pathetic but it just makes it hit home that no matter how hard I fight I just cant win.... sorry for writing this - its just that no one really seems to understand how I feel - I'm only 51 and feel like I'm 91 --- I realise its probably vanity but I came home and cried my eyes out,I suppose its the first time I've admitted to myself that I'm disabled,I've been off work since last August,I've lost my independance and I hate it !! ...As I said I'm sorry for posting this,I just needed to get it out of my system and I wont let my family see me upset so writing it down helps a bit

Hi Sandy, Try not to let it upset you, although I do understand how you feel. I hated using mine too when I first got it but if it helps then it makes sense to use it. Just remember you are still the same person with or without a stick. You might find you will have days you won't need it. I haven't used mine since getting my infusions so maybe when you get something that helps you better you will find you don't need it.Take care xx

It is a bit step though I must admit I was so glad for mine in the end and it's been a godsend! Had it over a year now (have two, one for each hand) and I don't know how I would have managed without it and I had one at 34. Hopefully the benefit will outweigh things for you.

Sandy, I love my stick. My stick is in a leopard skin print and I have another with flowers on it. I find it has so many other uses apart from helping me to walk. It enables me to prod children out of the when in crowded shops, to beat off small dogs and to gain my husbands attention when he is out of arms reach and suffering with selective deafness. They really aren't that bad, so try and cheer up.

Sandy, you will treat your stick as a much loved friend in the end. There will be days that you may not use it. This doesn't mean you have lost your independence it is something to help you keep it. You will feel different once you are used to using a stick. I find mine great for just leaning on when I need a rest.
It is hard and sometimes it does us good to shout about it all on here. Take care and chin up X

I have to admit, I love mine too! I agree with the rest thing, it's great for a lean on, especially when I have a lot of pain in my feet and am exhausted. I wish I had the assertiveness to prod haha! It is very tempting sometimes though.

thanks everyone,I realise I'm not the only one in this position, physio were going to give me two sticks but apparently my left arm is too weak ...I have used it today and it does help, but I must admit I'm really self conscious with it ..I suppose that will ease in time....I really appreciate the support, sometimes I think we all need a bit of help ...I need to say that Bev made me laugh out loud ... total tonic !! thanks again xx
