Hi bsk

That is really interesting - I had already read some writing on the acquired bacterial protection from mothers during childbirth from Weston A Price (Natasha Mcbride)

This chap makes a few good points on gut bacteria - and it's not by Dr. Oz - this guy hates Dr. Oz!

The paleo diet would tend to correlate with this Guardian article except Paleo tends to promote protein and fat as beneficial - question is were we foragers or hunter gatherers - much of our evolution came from meat eating and the size and shape of our digestion proves this - our digestion is much less capable of eating some foods than others

An excerpt from this article - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/prehistoric_life/human/human_evolution/food_for_thought1.shtml

"Because meat is relatively easy to digest and rich in calories and nutrients, early Homo lost the need for the big intestines of apes and earlier hominids. This freed up energy for use by other organs...."

It's good they are beginning to come around to looking at this instead in the mainstream of leaving it to the ostracised practicioners often labelled as 'quacks'

Professor (Emeritus) Jonathan Brostoff at Kings College London - also agrees that diet plays a huge role and that a 'stone age elimination diet' should be tried for all -

But it looks as though he has been bashing his head against a brick wall for years !

personaly think they need to put alot of investment into finding the link between gut/stomach and immune response ie t-cells

sean , Kings College London done alot of the early development into anti-tnf drugs & the do alot of research into gut/stomach so hope at some point they may come up with the answers we are alll looking for

Yes, investment would be good.

How are you feeling Colin? Glad to be home I bet! I hope you take it easy for a while and get yourself back to full health soon.

In my company we've been split in to specialist groups (called "towers") and nobody is really tasked with tying up one specialism with the other - from the outside it would seem as though each NHS health specialsm is tasked to do ITS own thing - why would a Gastroenterologist treat arthritis - they fix gut issues (before, during and after drug use from other specialisms). Why would a patient with arthritis be referred to an immunologist when they deal with allergies?

Most rheumatologists focus on what is occurring at the local joint areas - and the markers in the blood.

I wonder how much sway Professor Brostoffs opinions hold in the other specialisms like Rheumatology.

I don't think it's about money and although more authoritative studies would be welcome - it's about collaboration, communication, organisation - mutual respect and better management.

I don't think the rheumatologists are unaware, Sean.

Read this article the other day and thought it was really good. I have just re read it.

Years before I came down with autoimmune disease, I had IBS. One Of the posters I notice said the same thing.

Same with other conditions too - 92% of autistic children have GI problems too!

There are lots of reported improvements on development with diet change - SCD diet for example starves the "bad" bacteria and promotes a homemade yoghurt to repopulate the gut with bacteria.
