Subject: Is RA hereditary

Hie everyone. I'm only 23 and got RA when I was 14. Back then obviously I wasn't thinking of having a child but more recently have been. I met a woman with RA whilst having an infusion and she told me it's hereditary. Her father had it, she got it from a young age and two her her children also got diagnosed at an early age. I've done extensive research and kind find anything conclusive that denies or confirms this and wondered if anyone had this pass down down from parent to child in their family or knew of anyone that has?

Hi Laura
My mum had RA and I have it. My two sisters don't n my daughter hasn't tested positive for it so far in her life - she is same age as you.
So although they say it can be heredity it doesn't always mean it will be.
Not an answer for you really but our family history of it
Have you discussed possibility of starting family with docs? Might be a good start to ease your mind or help you decide what you'd like to do.
Hope you are keeping well

Hi Laura, they do say most Arthritis is passed down. I come from a family of five children. My Dad had OA quiet severe and I began down the same road in my thirties, but I am the only sibling of five. So I do think it is hit and miss.
There are lots of young mums on here I am sure some will chat with you.
Take care and chinup x

Hi Laura, my mother had severe OA, starting in her 50s. I've got a mixture of inflammatory arthritis and OA but none of my 3 sisters have any sign of it yet. Apparently, I had a great aunt with RA and some relatives with autoimmune illnesses but there is no proven link, as you have read.

Hi Wills.
I have discussed it with my doc. He said he's known where three of four people in the same family have it. All he mainly talks about what meds I'll have to stop taking before I start trying for a baby

I don't think it's hereditary as very few diseases are, but there are however genetic links.

My mother had RA and my late sister and uncle had Lupus. I have Lupus/RA. There is a link between Lupus and RA so I've read.

My mother and uncle came from a very large family and none of the others had autoimmune disease.

Thanks all for your replies. I'm due to see my Dr soon so I'll try and talk more in depth about it with him.

Found out from RA nurse that as far as she knows there is a 1 in 5 chance any children I have might get it.

Hi Laura, My mother had ra and I have ra although I had 2 brothers and a sister that don't have it. As I have 3 daughters it does worry me that they could one day get it but I hope not. One of my daughters has type 1 diabetes which is also an auto-immune disease. I was told it is not hereditary but if there is a genetic link then it increases the risk although they say it takes something to trigger it even with a genetic link.

Not forgetting Laura, your children also have half of their fathers genes.

I'm sure it was Sir Robert Winston who said very few disease are hereditary.

RA and especially the severity is linked to certain genetic factors with HLA-DR being a prerequisite for most.

HLA-DR has a binding site that expresses an amino acid "motif" of QKRAA.

Many gram-negative bacteria including Proteus Mirabilis and E-Coli (and the Epstein Barr virus) contain this

QKRAA - expressed in food proteins / dietry lectins including a "genetically modified" bacteria used in the dairy industry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactococcus_lactis

Role of QKRAA and involvement of E-Coli -

Role of QKRAA and Molecular Mimicry of Proteus Mirabilis -

http://www.kickas.org/medical/radocs/S1740252206000059.pdf

The link to bacteria and diet is then compelling when we realise that WGA (Wheat Germ Agglutinin) binds to fragments of bacteria cell wall ( N-Acetyl-glucosamine) - WGA then acts as an adjuvant in that it presents the bacteria to the immune system - cross reaction with QKRAA then occurs with T Cell then B Cell involvement -

The role of Wheat Germ as an anti-nutrient -
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8399111

BTW - N-acetyl-glucosamine is also present in the supplement form - Glucosamine - and there have been studies that show that the reason glucosamine helps some people is that is binds to the lectins like before the lectins bind to the bacteria.

Full loop to my own treatment 30 years agoo uncovered this - a doctor that used to work with my earlier Dr. John Mansfield
