Subject: Could this be RA?

Hi Everyone,

Hope yo don't mind me asking your thoughts and advice. I am currently being tested for MS (due to having several symptoms). Have had MRI's, waiting to see neurologist for second time in July and then to have more tests.

One of the main symptoms for MS is fatigue which I also understand is a symptom for RA, this I have been suffering with for just over a year.

I am on Amitriptyline which has helped with some numbness I have been having in my hands, but over the last couple of weeks I have become very aware of painful joints on both hands involving the 1st and 2nd knuckles and extending down the four fingers effected. There is also swelling and it is at it's worst in the morning (I cannot make fists without much pain). I have read that RA can sometimes first be felt in both hands, so I am wondering if this could be RA that I may have and not MS which I am being tested for. Just to add, my Father has had RA for 16 years.

Should I carry on with the MS tests only, or go along to my GP and tell him about my painful hands that I am also now having?

What do you think? What would you do?

I thank you in advance,

Wilma

Hi Wilma,

I have RA and it started in my hands and feet. My hands felt just as you describe and like you I couldn't make a fist first thing in the morning (well pretty much all the time really but it was worse in the morning).

I've not heard of numbness in connection with RA but it's a very variable condition and it affects people in all sorts of different ways. I would go with the old saying 'leave no stone unturned'... Go to your GP and talk it over with him and don't forget to mention that your father also has RA.

Oh, and yes, fatigue is a big factor with RA and the more active it is the more wiped out you feel.

Go and see everyone and tell them all everything - that way you stand the best chance of getting a correct diagnosis.

Good luck!
