Subject: Osteo Arthritis versus medication

From a newbie, good morning folks.
Have recently been diagnosed with Osteo Arthritis. I was aware there could be a possibility of my suffering from it but for a year was diagnosed as having sciatica! After seeing the fourth doctor in my practice I was finally sent for muscosketel! x rays, results being: Osteo Arthritis, levels 1 to 5 of the spine, and in both hips also. In 2007 when having scans for other problems it was discovered that I had an Aortic Abdominal Aneurysm , being inflated wall of main artery leading to stomach. Consultant informed me that because of my age, state of my heart and lungs my condition was inoperable, also that this artery could burst at any given time. His advice was to take each day as it came and also to be aware of any medication given for other ailments, to be especially aware of being given or taking any anti inflammatory medication which would cause bleeding of the stomach and hasten my death!. With the recent diagnosis of Osteo Arthritis my doctor has prescribed two lots of medication, each containing anti inflammatory ingredients, when I questioned him I was told he did not like my questioning his authority and there was no other medication he could prescribe!!! Am presently taking dissolvable paracetamol which barely helps with my pain control. Question being: is there any one of you out there who have the same dilemma as myself, if so what medication do you take, if any. Any reply would be gratefully received. Thank you for listening to my story....

Hi and welcome to the forum. I am an OA sufferer and have Asthma so advised not to take anti inflammatory. Sometimes the odd GP will tell me I would be better off with anti inflammatory pain killers when I remind them I have asthma they retract. There are plenty of painkillers out there I take Co-codamol and Tramadol. Is there another GP you can see? Maybe you could talk about your concerns.

Take care and I hope this is of some use.

Evening Mariene, thank you for your welcome and medication suggestions. I was given co-codamol when in hospital and it was my daughter who realised something was very wrong with my behaviour, it turned out I was allergic to these tablets and was hallucinating, no more of those pills for me I'm afraid. I will check out Tramadol and take it from there. Yes I intend returning to surgery to talk through my options, if all else fails then I will just get on with my life as best as possible. After all I have lived in the shadow of my Aneurysm for nigh on seven years now, am now in my eighty second year young so reckon I must be doing something right. I wish you well, kind regards x....
