Subject: Rheumatologist is so rude.

I have never posted here before but do read most of the new messages that come up. After seeing the post that bsk wrote about the rheumatologist I thought it could have been written by me!My rheumy is so bad tempered & patronisingly rude that I dread going for appointments. Can I ask my G.P to refer me to another local hospital ? as I too have frequently left in tears.

Wow, that is ridiculous, there is no need for it. I think you should both formally complain and get referral to other specialists.

We are allowed to complain and I don't think most of us would really dream of doing it...but... Perhaps they would change towards other patients and think twice about their behaviour if we did.

I have recently gone to a different GP practice in town after they kept cancelling blood test and nurse appointments because they did not arrange cover for absent staff, It seemed to be run on a shoestring budget.

Now I get better care and you both may if you change specialist.
Don't hang around a couple of years like I did.
Do it now!!!!

Regards and good luck. Emmx

Thanks for your advice Emm,this rheumy actually makes me feel sick with nerves. Im not some simpering little flower who doesn't speak up, its just when you are in pain you also feel weak. I always leave thinking I wish I had said this or that. I doubt if I complained anyone one would believe me as the nurses all swoon over him & frequently comment on how good Dr S is. The hospital itself hasn't got a good reputation & given the choice I would not have chosen to go there in the first place. I don't know what to do , but it cant go on like this as I will end up not going at all.

Beverely, sorry to hear you are having a bad experience too. I'm afraid I just told mine where to get off and my nurse is going to arrange a transfer to another one. Do you have anyone else you can talk to at the hospital who is supportive?

There is one thing you should think about though, and that is whether he is treating your disease as well as you would want. If the outcome is good, can you suffer his behaviour?

You can ask your gP to refer you to another hospital but you have to think about prescription of your meds etc. while that is going on. i.e. don't do what I did and walk out!

Hi again Beverley, if you don't want to complain just see your GP and ask to see another consultant. I did so a few years ago but because I wanted to attend a hospital that was nearer home. No questions were asked and it was arranged for me.

You could just say you would like another consultants view. But I would confide in my GP and say you don't feel comfortable with this person.
I did this today when discussing with my Rheumatologist a visit to a surgeon to discuss knee surgery, he was fine when I said I did not one particular DR and we talked about my options and decided together about which one I will see.
Don't leave it too long as you say we already feel vulnerable with all the pain we are in and it is hard to remember all the questions we need to ask. Today I took notes and asked all my questions from my list, after all I only get to see him twice a year.

Keep us informed and remember we pay for the NHS and are entitled to our choices and opinions!!!
Keep strong Emm x

Hi Ladies

I understand where you all are coming from, I feel for you BSK,(reading the other thread)and you Beverley! there is no need for any kind of attitude or bad behaviour from consultants / doctors, they should be doing a job which should be caring, compassionate and understanding otherwise they should change their jobs. what I find with the consultants that I have been seeing is that if you question them too much or don't agree to their method of treatment in all cases they can be bit funny! At one time my consultant even asked me to ask my GP to refer me to another consultant if I wasn't happy with the way he was treating me. its just shocking

Thanks for all your supportive messages. I have just made an appointment with my G.P & am going to insist I get referred to the better hospital in my area. If I don't do it I feel I, like bsk will end up walking out, but with my knees it will take such a long time to get to the door, my dramatic exit will have lost the effect ! Shouldn't have to be like this though, Ive worked all my life & if I was as rude to my clients I wouldn't have a business let alone a job. Merry Xmas to you all and I will keep you posted x

Hello all.
Iv also seen my own gp this week. Iv asked to be changed to the hospitals other rheumatologist. Mine was so rude some months ago first time I'd seen him in 6yrs. 6yrs ago he came across rude and made me feel I was wasting his time. Then the same this time. Iv heard the other Dr is brilliant so that's what iv decided to do. My gp has been great and has sorted out a script for steroids that iv waited for for two weeks from the hospital so she's complained and I'm finishing a letter to the hospital pals department. As youv said we really don't deserve to be treated this way we are only there cos we need help little advise and understanding with this dam disease. I usually post on useless doctors. Think we are all in the same sinking boat. Best wishes. Xx

I am so surprised to hear that people are having to put up with rude consultants. Do you all only have one consultant to see at your rheumatology department? I am very lucky, in Hull we have at least 2 maybe even 3 who people go to see, they are usually on duty at the same time, and a specialist nurse, plus the head consultant who is at another hospital and he tells us when first diagnosed that if we have a problem with the clinic to go see him, is always happy to see us if we are not happy with our treatment. My consultant is absolutely brilliant, she greets us with a smile, opens the door in and out for us, treatment is first class, I cant fault her, I did see another one a couple of times, she scared me a bit but I realised that some of these consultants come from other countries and they do seem a bit more abrupt but that is their way - but never rude. If it was me I would actually put in a formal complaint at the hospital, get your g.p. to refer to another consultant and if g.p. doesn't do it then put in another complaint to the medical council about your g.p. THEY ARE ALL THERE TO DO A JOB, NOT GIVE ADDED STRESS, IF IT WASNT FOR POORLY PEOPLE THEY WOULDNT HAVE A JOB.

Be brave and next time you go to a rude consultant speak out and think to yourself that you have a whole lot of people in your pocket with you.

Your GP should send you somewhere else without a problem I had a very rude Consultant and when I spoke to my GP about it I was referred straight away to someone else.
The way to go is not to put up with it and let our GP's know and when they don't refer patients to them it will be there reputation on the line.
Take care

when iwas first sent to rheumatology I saw a registrar who was loverly unfortunately I saw a consultant and she was so rude and put it quite bluntly that I have fibromyalgia and early inflammatory arthritis that will turn to rheumatoid arthritis when im older now I found it really difficult to accept this even two years on I work as a carer and my job means a lot to me and as you can imagine it was a hugh shock. that consultant thankfully left I then went under diffierent consultant who again was totally useless I complained and now im under a really loverly consultant really knows his job and works rerally hard to reassure me. but the damage has already been done

Thankyou Marlene, I must admit that I was such a girl when I went to see GP and gave the impression that it was the parking and distance from work as reasons I wanted to go elsewhere. Cant cope with confrontation at the moment, just haven't got the energy. Happy new year to all x

When I saw my rheumatologist as a private patient twice she was amazing, then I saw her as an NHS patient and she was beyond rude. Made me feel terrible and so low. I was so shocked. She even phoned me to apologise before sending a report to my GP which was strewn with inaccuracies. Terrible and shocking. I need to do something about it but not sure what to do. It's bad enough in pain every day and how that is a big enough fight on its own.
