Subject: Stopped Smoking 1 year later Diagnosed with RA

At 55 gave up smoking. At 57 diagnosed with RA.My theory is that my immune system was working flat out to negate the rubbish I was pumping into myself whilst smoking. Once I had stopped my "hyped" immune system had nothing to suppress so it decide to attack my joints instead. I have broached this theory with my specialists and they just laugh and say giving up smoking was the best thing I could do. Now, I am not writing this as an excuse to start smoking again but purely to see if anyone else has been through a similar experience. For your info I am now 61, on Humira and Methotrexate and am living life without painkillers...result.

I too gave up smoking after a 37 year habit, and bam! Within weeks I developed psorasis which I'd never had before, and then a few months later diagnosed with PsA. No health problems as a smoker! I'm convinced there was a link too. Don't bother starting to smoke again, once it's all been triggered.....

Maybe the arthritis was already there but the smoking was supressing the immune system, and therefore disabling it to fight the disease. Just a thought.

Trying to unify the theory of arthritis triggers - a search for "nicotene intestinal permeability" found many studies on nicotene showing that it decreases intestinal permeability.

All roads lead to Rome it would seem.

hi, just to put my penny worth. think i knew i had it for years due to aches and pains but it was when i got depressed after family bereavement that it came on strong - i'd sort of 'given up' had no fight left in me and bam out it came.
stopped and started smoking 3 times now lol i actually feel more calm when stopped like i have to control the cravings therefore more aware of aches but can handle it more when off the cigs!

My mother packed up smoking in her seventies. She gained a lot of weight and then developed diabetes. Pressurizing older people to quit smoking can sometimes be detrimental for their health.

Have you thought of using e cigarettes Ken. My husband uses them. They take away any cravings.
