Subject: Getting pregnant with RA
Hi, I'm 28 years old and have had Rheumatoid Arthritis for 7 years. My husband and I are trying for a baby with little success. I am on sulfasalzine- I did intially come off all medication but flared up badly. I am currently undergoing medical assessment as my menstrual cycle has been almost non-existent since coming off my contraceptive pill last August. I wonder if this could be linked to my RA. Has anyone else had a similar experience or knows how RA affects fertility? Thanks

Hi Lisa, I have just had a baby girl at the age of 36 having had RA for the same length of time as you. It took us a while to get pregnant but my rheumatologist assured me that RA should not effect fertility in anyway... it could quite easily be something else. You don't say how long you have been trying for? We were trying for 2 years and had started to have fertility tests to find out what was wrong... then got pregnant in the middle of having them! I am on Meloxicam and plaquenil and was told that these were OK to take while trying for a baby and during pregnancy. So maybe a change of meds could be what you need rather than stopping them all together? Best of luck Lisa. Let us know how you get on! X

Hi Lisa, Thanks for sharing your experience and congratulations on your baby girl! Me and my husband have been trying for 7 months so I guess it is still early days. We are undergoing fertility tests at the moment- they started them earlier than would havedone in normal circumstances because of my irregular cycle and mainly because of the RA. Thanks for the advice re medication- I have been on Plaquenil before so will mention this at my next appointment with specialist. Will keep you posted- hopefully will have some good news soon! x
