Subject: Is ironing a problem?

Hi, I'm a design student in my final year at uni and I'm looking at ways to make ironing easier for arthritis sufferers. Anything you could tell me about ironing with arthritis would be really useful. Thanks

I don't. So no problem, apart from being a bit 'crumpled'.

I don't either, I just buy stuff which doesn't really need ironing and tumbledry everything then put it over the back of a chair or in a basket (depending on what it is) next to the washing machine where it stays until I need it.

There was an info board about how to help reduce fatigue in my rhumo centre which suggested something like getting an iron proof mat to have on the ironing board so you don't have to move it so much.

I hated ironing before the Arthur arrived so no change there. I just make sure my iron is a light one with a god shape handle/grip. I can't think of anything that could be changed not an easy one. Maybe a soft grip handle. Someone else to do the ironing 'just joking'. I like most on here buy clothes that do not take much ironing.
James I hope you can come up with something!!!

Hi James. I send mine over to my mum. She loves ironing. I find the handle a problem as my fingers thumbs are rather painful expecially when holding the handle for a while. Standing not good as feet&knees give me jip have to keep bringing knees up. Its a proper workout. People do say to sit down on the job have tried but not for me the best idea is to put it in a basket then the boot of the car and take it for a drive and into mum. She's brilliant and I do tell her. Some clothes don't need ironing but a t.shirt should but I tend to put them on the line then after i tumble them for 5/10mins then fold straight away then put away.
Not much help sorry. Good luck in your final year.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your comments. They're really useful.

You all seem to be of the same mind that ironing is difficult and buying clothes that don't need ironing or getting someone who is willing to help out seems to be the best options.

If a better solution was found would you be more willing to iron clothes yourself or would you be more likely to stick with what you're doing now?

Is it the weight of the iron that makes it difficult, i.e. would a much lighter weight iron be more useful? Or is the problem more to do with the repetitive moving and manoeuvring?

Again, I really appreciate your feedback.

Hi James, I spent a while trying to find a light iron that still ironed the clothes well and the lightest one I found was 1.1kg. It is easier to use than the older one I had but still not perfect. I admit I don't do too much ironing. I think the weight is very important and also the handle is important, a comfort touch handle helps. When my wrists are sore I try not to iron as both the weight of the iron and the manoeuvring of it causes pain.

I think I would just stick with what I do now. I'm not keen on fussy clothes which generally need ironing as most of mine are quite simple, practical and comfortable with no faff to keep on eg no buttons.

My main issue would be things like bedding though even if there was a lighter iron the whole ordeal of trying to iron them generally would be still be there. You can buy non-iron stuff now anyway.

I never iron bedding, even my cotton stuff. The problem with light irons is they don't work very well or last very long. Putting up the ironing board is difficult too.

I rarely iron anything. Like everyone else, I tend to buy clothes that don't need ironing. Having said that, There must be people on here with children. Thinking back, when my children were growing up, I had to do quite a bit of ironing until they reached the age when they could do their own.

So maybe an easier way of ironing is not such a bad idea.
