Subject: overdosed

for the past 4 weeks I have been taking plaquenil, it should have been one a day but pharmacist made a mistake and prescribed 1 to be taken twice a day. Had to go last week to be shown how to inject myself and nurse told me to go back to 1 a day which I have. I have to say the 4 weeks were brilliant, no pain in fact didn't even feel as if anything was wrong with me, but now I feel absolutely rubbish. Don't know if its lowering the dose or because I am anaemic (cant spell!) my Hb last count was 101.0, does anyone know how bad that is? Luckily I am at seeing rheumy consultant this afternoon. Problem with me is I am so frightened of the mtx and the plaquenil, have been all the time, I am scared it will cause me to have aplastic anaemia, I know how bad aa can be as nursed my little grandson for two years with it until he died when he was 4. Has anyone been taking Plaquenil for a long time? Now my hb is low I am even more frightened as that is how aa starts. Sorry to moan I just needed to get it out of my system.

Hi julie
dont' worry about moaning that's what this forum is for.
I've been taking hydroch... (plaquenil) 2 a day since diagnosed in 2010. my eyesight has got worse but that is expected with this med, have to get eye tests yearly. as far as I am aware i have been fine with it. i am on methotrexate injections once a week and on humira injection every 2 weeks.
had a bad week last week, felt like had cold but better today my bloods were checked again and showed fine for b12 and iron levels.
As Colin says, speak to the consultant - that is what they are for - I hope he can reassure you and I hope you have a good day

thankyou for your kind answers. Colin I am sorry to hear about your brother, I hope you are coping okay. My grandson died about 10 years ago but it still hurts, its like yesterday. Went to clinic yesterday, explained how frightened I am about aplastic, she kind of reassured me saying how much they check bloods and as soon as anything is noticed they look into it, but nothing to worry about taking double dose, she is happy with my bloods as they are going the right way, February my CRP was over 200, now it is 28 (could have been the double dose!!) they are concerned about my iron and are doing some checks but I don't go back for six weeks. Yesterday I felt fine, today I feel terrible, my neck hurts and I feel as if I have a bit of a sore throat, typical isn't it, might call helpline later to see if I should still take plaquenil, don't know if its same as mtx, they always asked if I had a sore throat and said don't take mtx or injection if you are not well. Its learning all the time isn't it. I hope you are feeling okay yourself.
I ache all over so I hope its not another flare coming on, oh well another lazy day.

Hi Willis, wow that's a long time to be on plaquenil, I was hoping for only a couple of months! well that's what rheumy said, I don't seem to have any problems yet with my eyes but will keep having them checked. You said you inject mtx and humira, do you do both yourself? did going on the humira help. I am just a beginner with injecting myself, only done 2 so far its not been a problem but my hands still shake for a while afterwards.

I was just saying to Colin that yesterday I felt okay today I feel rotten, aching neck and just feel rubbish, but I suppose this is how things are going to be. My iron levels are still not right although my others are going the right way, maybe that's why I feel so lethargic. Oh well more spinach and liver and plenty of iron brew - you watch I will probably get iron overload!!! Take care and I hope you keep feeling better. Ive not had a cold or infection yet so don't know how my body will deal with it - I am a such a coward! thanks for listening to my moaning its good to know people do understand.

Hi Julie, I have been on plaquenil 2 tablets a day since 2010 while on methotrexate and then changed me to humira . Just had bloods done my iron is low so more blood tests unfortunately for me my meds are not working so they are trying intravenous once a month with me. They have taken me off plaquenil because I started getting pigmentation but other than that I had no problem with them, I m joining the club of more spinach and Guinness lol. Hope it works for you fingers crossed take care emma x

this is my second try at a reply. the server didn't work!!
i read somewhere that 5 years is the tops for planquenil - going to ask consultant next time i see him.

my husband does injections for me luckily - i've done the humira twice myself and like you i was shaking like mad afterwards - i don't like it :)
My iron is down a little but nurse says iron tablets are fine

because i felt like i had a cold in the week i didn't do the humira (nurse said any infection or colds do not take it)

I still have aches and pains and am always weary - takes me 2/3 hours to get ready in the mornings. I take paracetmol if the pain gets too much and i force myself to rest - i use to have two speeds - 100 miles an hour or stop - now i have stop or slow and it's so frustrating but over time i've started to adjust - no choice really.
this forum is great as everyone is supportive and helps keep me going on the bad days and flare days.

I hope they manage to sort you out soon and you get some respite from Arthur. :)

love to you all

Hi Julie, I have been on plaquenil for about 7 years and I have had no problems with it. I get my eyes checked every year and so far they have been fine. I have been told that it is rare to get eye problems with it at the dosage we take. They work out the right amount amount according to your weight. It is one of the safer drugs that is used for RA and Lupus. I take one, one day and two the next. Your HB is quite low at 10.1 but this seems to go along with the disease. My HB is about the same as yours.

thankyou everybody for comments its nice to know I am not the only one with these worries. I am feeling a bit better but I do seem to suffer stiff neck but I think thats from using laptop too much. Fingers crossed the iron medication, spinach and iron brew will keep on helping, dont like the spinach much but love the iron brew!! might try red bull next lol. thankyou once again and its lovely to know you are all there and I hope one day I can also help people with advice.

no Rhona sadly Im not in Scotland (I hope one day will have the confidence to go back to Scotland, or hopefully have a holiday somewhere) I am in Yorkshire, pretty place but you don't see the beauty of where you live do you. My daughter suggested Red Bull, but by mistake I bought Iron Brew, I love it cant drink enough of it, just having a glass now, not tried Red Bull yet. Didn't know it was drunk a lot in other areas, you live and learn everything on this forum. lol

Hi Julie, I've never tried red bull, I think it would have too much sugar in it for me. The irn bru factory is not too far from where I stay, just outside Glasgow, that is our other national drink, obviously whisky comes first, although that is too strong for me, lol.
