Subject: waiting time for knee arthroscopy

I have been put on waiting list and have been told it will be at least 3 months. I do not go out except to doctors as I am in awful pain as soon as I am on the feet for 5 minutes. The pain is in the knee going all down leg into foot (this leg and foot pain is the worst) pain goes up thigh into lower back (doctor said this is from the knee). I spend most of the time laying on the sofa. I have tried paracetamol ibuprofen codeine and co-dydramol none of which work very well because as soon as I start walking pain returns and I have to lay down. The co-dydramol affects my IBS giving me constipation and stomach cramps.
Sorry to go on can't stand this much longer, husband is having to do everything and he has hip arthritis and other health problems. I feel so guilty. My question is how long have others waited for this precedure and is there any way I can get them to bring it forward (GP says not).
Sorry for moaning I also suffer from anxiety amongst other things and this is making me so depressed. Cam anyone suggest anything. Thanks

Hi Carol
sorry you are in so much pain, I too suffer with my knees at moment mine are very swollen at the back of each knee. Your problem is worse than mine, I was wondering if you do have a rheumatologist clinic that you attend, if you do dont they have a helpline for you to ring and speak to your specialist nurse, if you do you could tell her that it is unbearable and they would maybe get you into the clinic faster. Sorry I cant help much more than maybe say go see someone private but that of course costs money. I am sure someone else will come along soon to give better advice than I can. Hang on in there.
Just remembered have you tried a bag of frozen peas wrapped in teatowel, put on knees for 20 minutes at a time, it does help for a while.

Hi Julie
Thanks for your message. I have osteoarthritis not rheumatoid so go to the orthpaedic clinic. I had thought about going private but at nearly 66 am worried about spending limited savings and having nothing for the future. I have written to my consultant today to ask if the procedure could be done sooner. Will let you know but don't hold
out much hope. Hope you get the help you need with your knees. Take care Carol

thanks Carol, good luck with getting where you need to be, I know what you mean money wise I am 62 and it is getting harder to survive without paying out for private - although I admit i have done twice and am so glad I did it was worth the money to get where I needed to be at instead of waiting for doctors to arrange things. Keep us informed of how you get on. Hope you have a good day to day, mine are bearable today but going out to a garden centre so I know by time I get back they will be painful, but I need to get out or I will go mad.
