Subject: Codeine for osteoarthritis and steroid injections
Follow up to my last post I have seen consultant and am awaiting a wash out on my right knee. The doctor has prescribed codeine for the excruiating pain I get in the knee and down the leg into the foot (which is the worse pain) and up the thigh into lower back. Paracetamol and ibuprofen don't help much. Not sure if codeine is helping, does anyone have any experience of this drug. Also I had hoped they might offer a steroid injection into the joint, but no doctor said it could cause an infection and although rarely snap the tendons, so they didn't like doing it. I really did wonder if it was more to do with NHS cuts. Anyone been told this. Love to hear from you all.

Hi Carol, I have OA and they do start off with low pain meds as further down the line you most likely will need them upped. Sorry to be bearer of bad news. I have never heard of steroid injections causing infections or snapping Tendons but I am not a Dr. I have had steroid Jabs in elbow shoulder and spinal ones so I don't know anything about the knee ones. I am sure someone will be able to help. Have a chat with your Gp if the Codeine isn't helping there is no reason for you to be in pain. There are lots of pain meds and some can be used together to give you a better pain relief. I hope this helps a bit. Take care and I wish you well X
