Subject: steroid injections

Hi, I have already had two injections, one in February and one end of March. I just wondered how many of these you can have, does anyone know. At moment I am trying my hardest to cope with my very swollen and painful knees, because I am worried if they give me an injection now I wont be able to have any more later on if needed. Please dont suggest draining and injection into the joint because I am absolutely terrified of the idea, I know it would help but it is a phobia I have had for a long time, before even I got diagnosed with RA, same as a lumbar puncture the thought of these two proceedures makes me feel so shakey and could actually cry, which I nearly did last time they suggested it, but I think doctor only wanted to do it because she had a trainee with her, got one in my bottom instead which was fine, needles dont bother me anywhere else, and it did take away the swelling. Just the thought of anything going into any joint sends me into a turmoil.
thanks for reading
xx

Hi Julie, Usually they don't like to give too many, some say no more than three in a year into a joint but in the past I have had more than that. It is not a good idea to get too many into your bottom though as they can have a lot of side effects. What medications are you on? I would think that you probably need a review of your medication if your knees are swollen and sore. I have had many injections into my knees and although it is not pleasant getting fluid drained it is much better than trying to walk on painful knees and it only takes a few minutes. I have cried with the pain in my knees before but never from getting them injected. Good luck x

Hi Rhona, I have just taken my 14th dose of mtx (20 mg - 8 tablets)I started two weeks on 10, two weeks on 15 then onto the 20. I also take diclofenac and folic acid. Actually I have just had phone call returned from me leaving a message 2 weeks ago!! from rheumy nurse, she said specialist nurse might ring me back later to say up my dose or go in - oh god please dont say come in to have my knees done.

I know what you mean about crying with the pain in knees its unbearable isnt it, but again I am so scared of the joint injection and draining that for last few days I have suffered it, its going off even more today luckily by tomorrow I should be okay.

I have a great husband who just lets me stay upstairs and brings me all my meals he is a god send otherwise I would be up and downstairs and that wouldnt have helped. Thanks for your info re getting your knees done but Im sorry I am so frightened it didnt give me any comfort, like I said I am so paranoid, if they would put me to sleep thats different they can do what they like while I am asleep lol.
