Subject: Rheumatoid arthritis and lower back pain
I have rheumatoid arthritis which until recently mainly affected my hands, arms, knees and feet. I am on a concoction of drugs for my ra but recently I have developed severe pains in my lower back. Gp gave me co codamol and diazapam to control the pain. Rheumatologist was adamant that this issue had nothing to do with ra and did not even discuss it. This has been going on for 7 weeks now. Un able to work and I have had an MRI arranged by gp which shows deteriation of the discs in my back. Could the 2 be connected? I am just so fed up now with it and I seem to be getting nowhere. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would agree mainly, I remember my rhumatology nurse saying RA does not cause back pain. It may contribute to issues such as poor posture and mobility which in turn may have an impact on your lower back, eg walking funny due to painful knees, hips, feet etc... from the RA which, as Colin says, physio may be able to help with, but back pain is not caused by the actual RA itself.
