Subject: now on MTX whats the do's and dont's

have just been told that my blood test showed me having RA Lupus and sygrons which makes life difficult for me as I already have OA ( had wrist replacement and am riddled with it, also have Spondelothesis type 2 diabetes under active thyroid stomach erosions, angina and asthma high BP and cholesterol ( under control) think that's all of it, so now on MTX what's the general info about it, my DR says my medication is fine with it despite it being so many, I also take soy Isoflavins, I was told only 1 folic a week but many seem to be taking more then that, as I'm new here sorry to tell you so much in one go

hi Michelle , Mtx is the normal drug they start with for RA , it can work very well & been on it 15 years myself & now dont get any side effects from it

what level Mtx they starting you on , the amount of folic acid depends on consultant any the side effects from MTX

I am on 10mg then it goes up to 15 after 4 weeks, just hope not to get any side effects, is it worth increasing the folic acid if I do feel bad,? so far so good with no side effects,

hi Michelle , pleased you are doing good on Mtx , they should take blood test every month while you are on it & maybe bit more when you start or increase the drug .

a lot of Consultants dont like increasing folic acid because it may make Mtx less effective but having 5mg six days a week means you can take a lot higher dose , having higher dose folic acid can stop alot of the side effects from Mtx but you have to follow what your consultant advises
