I've been prescribed one to two a day. The capsules are 500mg. This doesn't cover me for a 24 hour period as I am waking up stiff and in pain. Can I take a third tablet just before bed? Does anyone take more on a daily basis?

Hi Samantha , you need to be refered to a rheumatologist & given some drugs which are Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD)along with Naproxen , ask your GP to refer you if they have not done already

since I have been diagnosed my medication now is methotrexate , sulfasalazine, folic acid and until these tablets get into my system I had steroid injections once a month, and can still take my other pain killers as well until main tablets kick in .

Thanks for replies. The rheumatologist prescribed the naproxen. I wanted to know if I can take more than two a day as the prescription says only 1-2?.

If the prescription says 1-2 then I wouldn't go beyond that. I agree with Colin and think you should be on something else or a steroid injection would help if you are waiting on them kicking in.

I think you might need something else besides Naproxen Samantha. I wouldn't take more than has been prescribed. My doctor told me that Naproxen can make infections linger and my rheumatologist said that they don't like people to use anti-inflammatorys over a long period of time. If Naproxen isn't working they will try something else.

Hi Samantha, like you I'm currently just taking anti inflams and was taking naproxen 500mg 2 a day. I would take 1 in the morning with breakfast and 1 in the eve with cuppa and biscuit as late as I could to help me in the morning. You should also have something like Omeprasole to protect your tummy from damage by the naproxen. I found they worked really well for me for about 6 weeks and they then wore off and I went back to GP to get an alternative. He's given me Celecoxhib which aren't really helping yet so I may need to go back. Seeing my rheumatologist in sept and I'm thinking he might put me on a dmard then. I'm told it can take a while to get meds right and with anti inflams you may need to try a few until you find one that works for you but even then it can wear off and you do need to keep swapping around. I'd definitely always make sure I have something to take at night to help the mornings though. Good luck let us know how you go with it. Rosie
