Subject: Can an injury cause a flare up?

Morning all,
Rosie back again with more questions for you all!!! (Last thread was newly diagnosed and worried). You were all do helpful and I love this forum.

Well, over the weekend I slipped and fell. It really wasn't a heavy fall at all more like a gentle slide, my children found it very amusing!! I slightly jarred my right wrist but it was really insignificant, I thought. However 5 hours later and ever since, my wrist is now sooo painful, can barely move it, it's very hot. I'm struggling with very simple tasks that require using my wrist, washing, dressing, making pack lunches, driving etc. Now there is now way that I would have expected to have any injuries from this small slip and wondered if a slight jar to a joint could cause it to flare up? Any thoughts please?

As in my previous thread im new to all this and I'm only currently taking anti inflams, no dmards and if this has caused a flare up, it's by far the worst I've had since onset and I need to get on top of it quickly, I think, however I do that??
Thanks everyone, Rosie

Hi Rosie, I think a fall has probably set your wrist off. I have OA and fell like you and was hurting all over for days.
If it doesn't settle a trip to the Dr's might be good.
Take care and I hope your wrist settles soon. x

Hi Rosie
Great question rosie :-) I was washing windows last week and my right arm got tired after 3 windows so stopped
That evening I was in a great deal of pain in my wrist elbow and shoulder and it went on for days so I suppose a fall or heavy work can cause a flare
No more windows me lol
Take care hun hope u feel better soon

Whether it's medically proven or not, I'm of the belief that an injury can cause a flare-up. I was involved in a car crash a few years ago and my RA was quite under control at that point. Because of the neck and back injury I sustained, I had to walk in an awkward position which threw the position of my hips out. This caused a huge amount of pain and I believe started a flare-up. At the very least, it delayed my recovery progress from the previous flare-up.
Feel better soon!

Hi all, thanks for your answers and yes certainly seems to be the theme here. My wrist had settled a little bit but still painful so shall keep an eye in it and toddle off to docs if it doesn't settle down completely. It's a bit off a learning curve from diagnosis to understanding your body and how it responds to the disease, meds, different circumstances etc.

I shall now certainly be steering clear of cleaning windows and car crashes from now on!!

Keep well everyone, Rosie x
