Subject: Difficulty opening packaging
Hello everyone, I am a student currently at Loughborough University and am developing a product that is designed to help those with rheumatoid arthritis in their hands open food packaging. The food packaging I'm looking to address is things such as bags of rice, vacuum packed sandwich meats, sealed packs of bread buns etc. It is designed to be a safer, easier and quicker alternative to opening packaging with scissors or knives like most of us resort too. My question is would this be something you would be interested in seeing being produced? Would you find it useful? If not why? And what types of packaging would you expect it to be able to open? Thank you for any feedback and help it's much appreciated. Simon

Hi Simon, I think there is something on the market already for that type of thing. However, something that can open rigid plastic packaging would be very useful. I struggled for about 10 mins the other day trying to get oral b toothbrush packaging open with scissors and a knife. Even people without arthritis would find that useful.

Hi bsk, thanks for the feedback, do you perhaps have a link to the product you are talking about? That's also an interesting point about the rigid plastic packaging problem, I'll see if I can include that in the design too.

I can't provide a link but I've seen them on sites that provide equipment for disability

I'd agree with bsk about the oral b toothbrush packaging. Anything shrink wrapped as well. Why they shrink wrap cucumbers is beyond me.

@bsk, are you talking about the tools with a grip and extending blade used for cutting clamshell packaging and the like? As I am attempting to build on and adapt/ improve that concept for everyday food packaging. @Linda, thanks for commenting, may I ask what you normally do when faced with difficult to open packaging like those you've described?

Hi Simon, that wasn't what I meant but on have a quick search, can't find what I'd seen before. I was thinking more of something that was easier - a bit like a blade with a covering of some sort. Can't really explain. So maybe it would be a good thing to design. I'd buy it!
