Subject: I have my appointment

I have my first rheumatologist appointment on 7th May. My gp has already done bloods and an xray. What can i expect from this appointment? I am taking some photos of my feet and knee when they were really bad so that he can see how bad it gets. Hopefully this will be helpful.

hi Theresa , you should not need them realy as he/she can look at them , they should check all your joints , they tend to know where to press & find places hurting that we dont know are playing up

main thing for them is to sort out treatment & maybe few more test so hope it goes well for you

My xrays were clear, so i must be in the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis. I want him to see what swelling i do get, because i dont have them everyday.

I thought it would be helpful, because what i describe could differ to how he hears it if you know what i mean. I also had neg RA bloods but i did have high white blood cell count which i was told could be inflammation, although that was dying down by time bloods done.

I wouldn't bother taking photos Theresa as they can tell from examination and take into account what you say. Also, blood results tell them a lot too. They know exactly what to look for.

Also, swelling that has gone down is not indicative of active disease so they may well ignore them if your inflammation markers are down and some rheumy's take a 'wait and see' attitude if you are RF -ve . Mine did. If your inflammation markers are up you don't need to take photos to prove you are having problems.

Clear x-rays don't necessarily mean you are in the early stage of RA. It's really not that clear cut if you are sero -ve. Some people only ever have a one off episode of inflammation. I had a friend who had it for a year and then it disappeared. Try not to second guess what they will say and good luck :)
