Subject: Cant believe this is happening

Hi all
I am just back from a hospital appointment with my 10 year old little boy
he was having pains in his leg around his hip joint knee and ankle also sore
when we got there doc did a full body exam and found stiffness in both shoulders also
to make a long story short doc thinks my small man has JRA you could have blown us away with a feather
he is going to be refered on to the same rheumy as myself
any one have any thoughts or expierence with this is it the same as adult ra or can they grow out of it
we were so shocked we didnt ask any questions
hugs to every one
Tara

Hi Tara,

I am sorry to hear that the doc thinks your little boy has JRA. Hopefully it won't be that and just some growing pains or something mild that kids get. It is good though that he is sending him to get checked out and then if he has got it then they will know what to do. I don't know very much abour JRA but if he does have it then he might have it mild and i have heard the kids can go into remission with it. The other thing to remember is that medication has come a long way, even over the last 10 years and should get better still. Try not to worry too much until you have seen the Rheumy as it won't do you any good and will cause you more pain. It is horrible when our kids are unwell, my daughter became diabetic when she had just turned 12 and it is still a worry and she is now 34. Take care and hope you find out it isn't JRA when you go to the rheumy. xx

Thanks so much for your replys
this all started about 2 months ago Oran came home from school with a sore hip he was playing in a hurling match that day so i thought he pulled some thing but it did nt settle down
i took to my gp and he sent him for xrays at our hospital all came back normal
saying all that doc in a and e was nt happy so asked me to bring him back in a week
when i went back he asked if there was any one in the family with ra the penny dropped with me
looking back he had all the signs but i never thought of it you dont expect to have a young child to have the same sytoms as your self so i just did nt think of ra
any way rant over

Hi Tara,
I am sorry to hear that your little man may have JRA and am sure it must have been quite a shock for you and your family.
Hope it is not but if it is at least the medication now is a lot better than it used to be.
My own son has AS he has had it now for four year's and is on a bio-logic and he seem's to be managing well, so I know what you are going through although my son was older 23yrs old.
Hope everything work's out ok hug's Deborah x

Hi Tara,

I was diagnosed with JIA when I was 14 (17 years ago). The hospital were very good and I was diagnosed very quickly and put on medication within a few days of being admitted into hospital (I was really ill with mine, my GP thought it was flu and kept telling us to come back, until I couldn't physically get to the surgery). I was back at school with reduced hours within 2 months and got my statement very quickly. I had to change some of my activities that I could do at school - no more hockey :( or cross country :). We were told that it was possible that I might grow out of it. The medication that is available now is so much better than then so I think we should all be hopeful for children with arthritis leading normal lives. Good luck Tara.
