Subject: Psoriatic Arthitis and burning sensation

Hi all new here and have found lots of very usful info. I have had Psoriasis since I was 8yrs (now 45)I have had back, neck, feet and finger pain for years, but nov2012 suddenly got much worse have been diagnosed with PA.
I was wondering if anyone else has had the burning sensation in their throat? I thought it was acid reflux but that seems to be more a burning in the chest. prob not related but worth asking!lol
Having read some of the other posts, I also have the long 2nd toe.
I am amazed at how quickly it has progressed! is this common? The consultant also mentioned eye problems, My eyes itch and become blured at times any one else have this?
Sorry Im asking so many questions, I'm just find this so difficult and feel so alone, finding this sight has been wonderfull.

Hi Meggie,

Welcome to the forum. I thought i would bump your post up in the hope that someone with p/a may be able to answer your questions. I have r/a and it is similar in a lot of ways. Not sure about the acid reflux, could it be the medication that's causing it? I always take my medication after food. What medications are you on? the drugs usually help in stopping or at least slowing down the progression of the disease and some have it milder than others so no one really knows how it will progress. I know that r/a can cause dry eyes etc and many on here use drops to help.

I hope you feel better soon. x

Hi Meggie,
Firstly Let me welcome you I have pa as well in all the joint's even my cheek bone's and behind my ear's sometime's they swell up that much I have to move my glasses.
I have the long second toe as well and have the eye problem it's the left eye for me and is mostly the left eye with pa.
The burning in the chest/ throat is possibly the chest bone's as the burning can be a sign of inflamation Pa can affect a lot of place's bone's, skin, hair, eye's, musscle's, and nail's.
So I would say that it could be your rib's and with the inflamation could be affecting your chest musscle's and of course then the gullet I know that inflamatory medication's can affect the gullet. And we are all on plenty of them.
I know you cannot blame your arthritis for everything. But it usually turn's out to be the arthritis. So I would go and see your doc and maybe get your medication looked at as burning can be a sign that your med's are not strong enough.
Hope you find out the problem and get sorted and if you need to have a chat or want to know anything I am here Deborah.

Thank you for replys
Yes Deborah it is my left eye to! I seem to be getting worse very quickly just this last week my knees have become so bad that I really stuggle with stairs ankles are also swelling.
I had to have my ring cut off today thats the last of my jewelery I cant bare the weight of a necklace!. Drs don't take me very seriously, I have a very high pain threshold (ie broke my shoulder and didn't know it) The drs /nurse do my joint score but it seems because I don't scream when they touch the joints they don't mark it down. I have booked to see gp but that wont be until 29th. Would love to know more of other peoples experiences. Meggie

Hi Meggie,
It was my knee's that started first and I remember that in just one week they got that bad too that I used to cry at the thought of having to go up the stair's.
And I remember going to my doctor and having blood test's done and then having to go in a week later for the result's and asking her is it possible that I feel much worse this week than last? And of course she said yes.
I like you too cannot stand the weight of a necklace round my neck and it's a pity as I like my jewellery.
And also had to buy larger size ring's but noticed they were getting tight too I don't wear them only when going for a meal or something.
I have had pa for 13 yr 's now and have noticed period's of being not too bad to very bad and I find that it's all to do with your medication.
Meggie if you don't mind me asking what medication are you on?
And how long since you diagnosis?
Hope you find out what it may be and get sorted.
Keep in touch Deborah

I had my first diagnosis in nov 2012. I have had pain in my toes and fingers for years I put it down to smoking but I stopped smoking in July 2011 and my fingers and toes got worse, I have had neck and back pains since a car accident 20years ago. The knees, ankles, elbow and chest have been more reacent. I have started on Methotrexate, naproxen and folic acid. I have put on a lot of weight but I think thats more to do with the lack of exercise. Ive been aneamic for about 4 years, just read that it can be another symptom. lol Im so annoyed at myself for not going to the docs sooner. Are you working? Getting any help? or any chance to meet fellow sufferers?

Hi Meggie,
I didn't know that you can be low in iron with this disease so you learn something knew everyday.
Sorry to hear about your accident were you seriously hurt at the time?
I notice that if you hurt something this disease seem's to concentrate on it.
I too have put on a lot of weight I think that anti inflamatories can cause weight gain and I suppose less activity does not help much as well.
I had to retire at 33 as I just couldn't work any more I found I was just getting worse every week.Sometime's I would love to be back doing something but I am just deluding myself.
I had a great chat with my doctor once who told me my disease will get worse with time although they can try and slow it down it cannot be cured and to concentrate on using my brain rather than my body which I found has not worked due to the fact that I am so tired all the time.
But I alway's find something to occupy me and am interested in load's of thing's.
Don't go out at weekend's as I have not been able to do that as long time and have lost touch with my friend's as I just can't keep up.I find this a very lonely disease.
I have a very good husband who has helped me a lot and did most of the bringing up the children.
So what I do is just concentrate on the thing's that I can do and thing's that bring me enjoyment.
I think this is the hardest part is to learn to live with this disease but I still make mistake's and maybe do to much at time's and then pay for it later you would think I would learn by now lol.
I have never met anyone with with PA or RA the only person I know who has an anti- inflamatory disease is my oldest son who has (AS) and he has started bio-logic's as well although he say's they have helped him a lot so at least we have each other to talk to although it must be very hard for him at time's as he was diagnosed at 24 yr's.
I am on a bio-logic and methrodrexate and naproxen and also take paracetamol and have had no side effect's which is good.
What about you how have you found the methrodrexate help's?,
are you working? have you met anyone with the same illness?
and have you got help?
Sorry for the long post, how are you today? Deborah xx

Hi Deborah
Not to bad today thanks, as for the long post its great !!! So good to talk to someone with experience of the condition. At the moment I am still working as a data manager in a high school. (All computer work)I am getting slower as some days my fingers don't work to well my boss has been really good (so far)But I do get really tired I am worried about making mistakes.
I read that in later stages of the condition the red blood cell count drops due to the amount of inflamation- not sure how that works.
Ive only just started on the Methotrexate the consultant raved about it, but the nurse specialist was a bit more scepticle and said it might take a while or might not suit me, I do get a bit nauseous after taking it but no other side affects thankfully:-)
Hows your day been? Meggie x

Hi Meggy,
I am glad to hear that you are still able to work I know it can be very hard at time's especially when you feel so tired.
I am alway's tired it seem's to be relentless you alway's seem to be pushing yourself but I know at the minute my medication is not as good as it was but I was put up again to my higher dose of methrodrexate 25 mg so am looking forward to taking that today as I felt better with it.

I agree with the nurse I find methrodrexate is very good at the start although it does not suit all people but I had a good number of year's on it and at least while we are on it the disease slow's down and I know that it stop's your joint's from being deformed especially your finger's mine are ok in fact you would not know that I had this disease.
I never had any side effect's only mouth ulser's and if you take frolic acid every day except the day you take the mtx you have no bother with these.

I have been on mtx for nine yrs and most of that time on the high dose so I hope you are the same.
If you are having trouble with sickness ask your rhumy nurse for anti sickness tablet's they will help with this.

Yesterday I planted a few summer flowering bulb's so can't wait to see them come up.
Today I am getting a bit of shopping and have to go to my son's birthday party this evening that's the one with AS he is 27yrs old today feel so old now. So looking forward to that.
My other son is 25yrs old and so far he is fine which is great.
I have two grandchildren a boy who is 22 month's old and a girl who is 22 month's old they are so funny.
Also I have two more due this year so it is very exciting.

My Grandson Ethan tried to help me up off the chair the other day and he get's me my slipper's or shoe's which ever one is handy it is amazing what they know at that age. Also I noticed that when I go to get up and maybe make a noise he is copying me he's sound's like an old man of ninety so must try and not make any noise.

What about you Meggie? Have you any children?
Hope you have a good day today and look after yourself as much as possible and good luck with the methrodrexate it will take a while to work but it will help.
Keep in touch enjoy our chat's Deborah xx

Hi Deborah
Bad day today Ive had a lot of pain in my neck, shoulder left ear across my head and my left eye.phoned the help line as they said I should ring if unsure as could be medication. Well i wish I hadn't the nurse said its unlikely to be meds as early days "probebly an ear infection see your GP" I explained its not my ear it just behind the ear to which she said well its definitly not the condition, Maybe you should get your eyes tested!. good job it was over the phone I could have slapped her, Thank god for this site. She did say I could speek to GP about uping the naproxen Im on 250 twice a day she said I could take 500 so I got off the phone and took another which seemed to help, every 6 -8 hrs seems better for me.
Enough moaning now!
Hows your day? How was your sons birthday hope you had a good time.
I just have the one daughter shes 10 and is a competative swimmer. She has just developed dry skin patch in her navel and occaisionally I think there are signs of psoriasis on her scalp then I try to convince myself its just all the swimming. But the school did arrange physio for her as she is "not very flexible" I am so scared that she may have this. I thought I would talk to my GP when I go on Monday (better to know).
Well time for bed now .
Thank you, I really enjoy our chats to, it really helps. Meggie x

Hi Meggie,
Sorry to hear that you did not get much help from the helpline and totally understand your frustration .
I think you would know if you had an ear infection.
Also I think there is a lot they still have to learn about these disease's.

Sorry to hear you are having a rough time at the minute and I know what that is like you never really get used to the bad day's but I am alway's hoping tomorrow is better so I am glad to hear the naproxen has helped you. Isn't it a good job there is something that can help us.

I understand the fear you have about your daughter,I do so hope she may not have this horrible illness but understand why you want to get her checked out, oh she is so young but on the bright side I have read that if you take the psoriasis first the arthritis is not as bad than if you take pain's first. But finger's crossed she will be ok.

My son was diagnosed with AS at aged 23 and he is on Humria and anti-inflamatories he had to give up his work as it was too heavy and has been looking for something easier but no luck yet I think once he mention's he has arthritis employer's don't seem to want to know.

My son's party was good just was totally exhausted talking to different people was home at 10.30 could hardly keep my eye's open felt like an old 90 yr old lol and only had tea and cake. It was nice to get caught up with everyone though and it's strange but all my son's friend's are really good fun and seem to be very intelligent and you can talk to them about anything well nearly and they talk to me about their promblem's and what's happening with them. They alway's ask me how I am and are more considerate than people my own age.

How are you getting on with work? Weather here is dreadful at the moment north wind's and rain and it is really cold not good for pain's.

Anyhow Meggie hope you are a lot better and hope everything goes well with the doc on Monday and have a good weekend take care Deborah x

Going to get my jim jam's on as I can hear that wind and just want to get tucked up in bed nite x
