Subject: severe neck pain

does anyone else with RA suffer with pain in the neck? mines been so bad its actually put me on my knees in tears and made me throw up with the pain that seemed to shoot into my head ...I've been to my GP who just gave me tramadol which are doing nothing to help... I've phoned the hospital today trying to get an appointment but my rheumatologist is on holiday (typical !) just wondered if anyone has any ideas that might help and when I do see the rheumatologist should I ask for some type of neck support because I feel like its hard to hold my head up .. sorry for moaning - just feeling really sorry for myself at the moment !!

Hi Sandy, can't you ring the hospital and ask to speak to the on-call rheumy? There should be someone on 24/7 and you can get advice on the phone or arrange to go and see them.

I think you have to be careful neck collars .

Hi Sandy,

I have had pains in my neck and also going up through my head and it is horrible. I actually think it comes from my shoulder. As bsk says you should call the hospital and they should have an on call rheumy there or if it's in the morning then there should be someone else there to advise. I often press my neck area with my index finger and at certain points it is agony and i press hard at the spot and it can help a bit. Ask at the hospital about a neck support and if needed they should supply it. Also make sure that your pillow isn't too high, i can only sleep with one soft one now.

Hi sandy
When my neck pain acts up I roll up a small blanket like a baby blanket and I place it a round the back of my neck and over my shoulder s and its like a neck support I too feel like I can't hold up my own head when the pain is at its worst
Hope that helps a little

just wanted to say thanks for the replies - I was so bad this morning I was in agony that I phoned the hospital and more or less begged them for an appointment ... they gave me a steroid injection and have made me another appointment for Thursday when my rheumy comes back of holiday when they say that if the swelling hasn't gone down and the pain eased off a bit that I might have to have an injection in my neck - scary - but to be honest I think 'd agree to anything for a bit of relief at the moment !! ..anyway,thank you everyone x

Hi Sandy, hope you are feeling a little better to-day. Don't worry about the injection they are v ery good at what they do. When they said they were going to inject my spine I was scared (normal). But the relief is worth it. Try to rest up over the week-end x

Hi Sandy, so sorry to hear of your neck problem.
I have had it very severe too. I now sleep with a travel pillow round my neck each night and have done for a year now. I had physio and acupuncture for it and started to use it after that, the physiotherapist said she recommends it to patients.
It is quite soft and filled with those tiny polestyrine beads, in fact I have 4 and frequently wash them.
Hope you find some help soon. Emm x
