Subject: Refused DLA after 10 years

After 10 years of claiming DLA (low rate care/high rate mobility) my recent review has cancelled the whole lot. Nothing has lessened with regard to my arthritis, in fact its worse as more joints being attacked since last review. I also have panic attacks, have done for years. And the newest intro to my health is now the joys of menopause, with a little tablet for that. I didn't work while on DLA, as it was through my years of working lifting and handling that contributed to my arthritic problems, and therefore the final straw was an accident at work just doing my job. Anyway, I got the refusal letter this morning, and I feel they haven't read my review form, stating that I can do this and that, when I clearly stated I couldn't. My pain is constant, the minute I put one foot in front of the other, never mind walking a certain distance. And as for cooking a meal,I stated my hubby does the cooking but they seem to think I do. I even stated holding a pen was painful, thats why I use a laptop keyboard to do written correspondence. But no they haven't picked up on that. I have requested a copy of all the written medical notes and other correspondence, but Im just in two minds whether its worth appealling. Of course the cancellation of DLA has a knock on effect, the funds covered my taxis to medical treatments and appointments. Also I can't get free prescriptions so of course this helped me to pay for pre-paid scrips every month, which in turn will have another knock on effect as to what meds I will have to class as important. I just feel at the moment the fight as gone out of me, and Im not classed as 'Disabled' anymore. Anybody out there who can offer any kind words at this moment would be welcomed. Many thanks.

Thank you Colin, I will. I have just checked the Gov.UK website to read up on more about the PIP, as Ive not received any info, and it would seem that in my area it comes into effect in June. I will update this blog as and when it happens with how I got on.

Hi Kim, it seems standard that people have to appeal. It think they knock everyone back in the hope that some don't and so save money that way.

As Colin says, get a voluntary org such as CAB to help you with the forms.

Hi Kim, don't let one knock back stop you from claiming what is rightfully yours. This is exactly what Mr Cameron would like for people with no fight left to just give up. Kim appeal it and go to CAB for help with the forms.
I wish you all the luck in the world. XX

If you have to wait for a long time to see/speak to CAB, then please consider contacting your local AgeUK branch. They have a wider remit than delivering services to the over 50's and will provide advice and a very helpful service of helping you to fill in the forms for an appeal. Also, you should have a local Disability Advice Service in your area, so maybe worth googling them and getting in contact there. Good luck with it all. It really is appalling that they are doing this.

I just felt on a downer when that letter came through the post yesterday, and today Ive not had a good day with the pains. But after coming on here this evening and reading your kind 'motivations' its help perk me up and go for that appeal.

8 days since I got my refusal letter, and still waiting for my notes I requested of doctors feedback and what led to DLA refusal. I phoned the department to enquire how long Im expected to wait for the copies of notes and letters as I have a limited tiome to lodge an appeal. In the meantime Im sat here waiting for a call from the G.P to find out what exactly was wrote, as DLA was refused on whatever the G.P wrote. Well, as this is a new G.P practice (been a patient less than 2 month) and I have only seen one G.P for about 10 minutes, it will be interesting to see what conclusion they have come to knowing about me, I wish now I was back at my old practice I'd been a patient for over 25 years. Also this morning Ive cancelled all physio and hydrotherapy treatment, as due to having no travel funds through my DLA claim (that was) I am unable to attend as I can only get to appointments through taxis, as I would find the travel on public transport painful exhausting and anxious. Wonder how many 'kicks while Im down' the G.Ps phonecall is going to give me when it comes through.

Hi Kim, have tried patients transport from your hospital. It is well worth a try. It would save cancelling appoinments. I hope you get your information off your gp soon.
Take care

Hi Kazz, Im afraid I don't travel well on shared passenger transport as I get panicky and need to get off immediately. Private taxis basically got me A-B in the shortest possible time. DLA confirmed they assessed me on the G.P report, even though when I saw the G.P for a 10 minute appointment he clearly agreed he could see I was struggling with my arthritis and in pain. He then went on to arrange the Physio treatment, Ive now cancelled. Im now having to reassess all other medical treatments, as I do not get any help with meds(monthly prepaid scripts), glasses,or dental. My hubby is a pensioner, and we don't claim any help towards rent or council tax, but then again with or without DLA we still couldn't get any extra help. The only thing I get free is the annual sight test as I am a diabetic. I feel now the precedent this goverment has set targeting disabled people is not going to be changed by any other goverment whoever comes to power on promises of 'doing good'. Sorry for the letting off of steam, but it is sooooo maddening.
