So interesting this is. I started Enbrel last November and have been suffering with cold sores. I've had them before, but I had three in one month. I've mentioned it to my RA nurse to see if it is a side effect but she said it isn't. Will ask about this when I see her next month. Thank you.

Hi Paula-R,
Just wanted to tell you cold sore's are not a side effect of bio- logic treatment's,but are a side affect of the effect the treatment's have on your immune system by weakening it.
Which is maybe a good thing as that way we know the treatment is working because when we have cold sore's it mean's we are run down.

Actually getting fed up with people asking are you run down you look very tired etc but they don't realise what bio-treatment does to you and even with it I don't feel great.

I sympathise with you as I have a cold sore nearly all the time
and sometime's have to wait until one clear's up before I take my injection which mean's I have to do longer without it.

I would give this a try and let me know how you get on with it I know I am as I am fed up with going outside with these cold sore's as they look that bad and have noticed also that they are really large not like normal cold sore's. Deborah x.

Hello Deborah

Yes, I realise that it's all down to my immune system being not what it should be due to the drugs. I have in the past had cold sores, but not so frequently like I am now.

I did go to my local chemist to get some cold sore relief. I get my drugs from there and have become friendly with the girl on the counter. Her mums got RA and is on Enbrel, when I asked her where the cold sore stuff was she told me her mums had lots of cold sores since being on Enbrel.

I did mention this like I've said to my RA nurse, was told by the nurse who came out to show me how to inject that I must report anything out of the ordinary that happens because it may be a side effect and it needs to be reported. Like I said, she didn't seem interested about it.

I have had the tingle several times since and have applied cold sore lotion and it's stopped it developing. I have had what I think is two on my lips, (I've never had them on my lips before, always been in the corner of my mouth so didn't apply any lotion at first). I did go to the chemist and I asked the pharmacist if she thought that they were cold sores but she didn't think so and told me to go to see my GP. I can't go to my GP with just two sores on my lips, not going to waste his time. I still think that they are cold sores. I've had them for nearly two weeks now, one is beginning to go now thankfully. They really looked awful.....two big scabs on my lips.......yes, vanity I know.

Hi Paula-R,
My son is on Humria for AS and was told to go to his doc for cold sore's as well.
He gave him an anti histamine to take and apparently once you take it you can be clear of cold sore's for up to six month's which would be great.
So hope fully something will help us with these horrible thing's. Deborah x
