Subject: Methotrexate one question

Good morning,

I just started 10mg of methotrexate this week, I would normally drink every weekend about 10/12 pints over the 3 days. I am off drink for last 3 weeks and will be off it until the end of the month.

I am then however going on a stag for 3 days where I will certainly have more than 12 pints over the 3 days.

I understand everyone is different and body's react different to different drugs, but just wondering if anyone is currently on methotrexate and currently drinking as normal and not seeing any side effects or their bloods showing liver damage.

After the stag I will be off the drink until June to the next stag...

Any help on this would be appreciated, I have talked to doc and read up on it, but just looking for first hand experience.

Hi Tom,

It is usually ok to have a drink while on mtx although i am not sure about 12 pints. I usually have a few glasses of wine when i go out for a meal and it has never done me any harm. If you are still on the 10mg when you go to the stag night which is not a high dose then i would think 12 pints over 3 days would be ok. Some people do get some side effects with mtx although i didn't and remember to take folic acid a few days after the mtx. I wouldn't make a habit of drinking 12 pints every week though but i think on an occasion it would be ok but then again everyone is affected different with mtx.

Meant to say Tom, you will probably be getting weekly blood tests just now so just make sure that your liver is ok with the mtx before enjoying your drinks.

hi Tom , its ok to drink a small amount on Mtx , like rhona said , 10mg is a low dose & they will increase it at some point & also Rhona mention the blood test , when they have started or increased my Mtx they have done weekly test & monthly after that , they will check your ALT levels which show inflammation of the liver so you will be monitored & with the booklet for Mtx can check it yourself

enjoy the stag , just try not to have the blood test for few days afterwards , btw you wont get liver damage because they would stop Mtx if there was a problem before any damage is done

Hi Tom, I'm afraid I was told 6 units (not glasses) a week when I was on 7.5mg. You need to speak to your rheumy nurse and get some clear guidelines. It's not worth guessing as liver damage is not nice though I'm sure there is some leeway for celebrations.
