Subject: Co-codamol 30/500

I am new to this site having just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I have been prescribed co-codamol but I dont take it as much as was told I only take it morning and night. The reason for this is I am so scared of getting addicted to it as I have heard this can happen easy. At first I did not take it at all but feel it helps with pain most of the time. I also use a tens machine which helps a bit most of my pain is in shoulders, arms and especially hands. Has anyone taking co-codamol found they have become addicted to it or does anyone feel this can happen. I am type 2 diabetic and take a lot of other medications relating to this.

Hi Cosy, it's great to that you feel it is controlling your pain but you should take it as you are told to. If you need it all the time to get your pain under control it is not a matter of addiction. My view is that it is up the doctors to manage your drugs and they know what is a safe dosage for you. It's only an addiction if you take it when you don't need it.

Hi Cosy. I was taken off anti inflammatories and put on Co-codamol. I hated taking them as they made me really constipated, even with laxatives. I never became addicted to them as i was told to only take them when i needed to. Thankfully i find i rarely need them anyway.

Hello Cosy and welcome, Your Gp will manage the amount of co-codamol and will without you realising only prescribe what he/she thinks is safe. I have OA and live with daily pain I take Tramadol and Co-Dydramol. I am monitored and put the question about addiction to my Gp and his reply was I am keeping a close eye on what you take each month and I have no worries as you take less than precribe for the month.
Please don't put up with pain it isn't necessary. I hope this helps you. Take care and any questions you want answered or just a chat or advice or a moan or Rant feel free.
Lovely to have you on board. x

Thanks for all your replies. I did get the constipation side of things but that seems okay now. As it does seem to help just now I will take when required I suppose my GP would not prescribe if he thought it was too much right enough. Hopefully once we get some warmer weather it will ease a bit for a while without too much medication............IF WE GET WARMER WEATHER !!! lol.

hi there cosy, iv had osteoarthritis for over 20 years, im 51 this year, and was taking diclofenic for over 15 years, and found that I gained a lot of abdominal problems through taking them. I have now been on co codomol for about 8 months now, and find that although it doesn't kill the pain, it takes the edge of it. I too, like you, were worried that I might become addicted to it, and stopped taking it for a short time, but realised that, the pain was getting worse. I just take it as prescribed now, as the problems of not taking it, outweigh the problems of taking it. Im sure if you take it as prescribed by your doctor, you will be ok. Take care....we have the warmer weather to look forward to....which always helps x
