Subject: Best aids for chopping vegetables

Hi. My elderly mother is suffering so much at the moment with osteoarthritis in her hands, especially her right hand ( she is right handed ).She is fiercely independent and is determined to carry on making her own meals. Her biggest challenge at the moment is chopping vegetables. I have searched the websites for an aid that will help her but I am not convinced that the ones advertised will help her that much. The problem is she has no strength in her right hand so I think she needs an automatic machine that will slice carrots etc. I would be so grateful if there is anyone who could recommend anything out there that I could buy that will help to help my lovely old mum.

Hi Ellen, I use an ergonomic knife which works quite well

for some things. Her social services department might provide one for free as they did me. Also, a trick my mother, who had bad osteo, taught me is that quite a lot of things can be cut with a mezzaluna. You use a rocking motion with the heels of your hand. Doesn't work well for very hard veg but good for softer ones and lots of other things too. Also, many food processors have slicing and chopping attachments. A mini one might be a useful addition to her kitchen.
