Happy New Year to you all, i hope it's a good one for us all. I thought i would start the new year with a new thread.

I had a nice time with the family but thankful it's all over now, hoping nothing stops my Edinburgh visit this week.

Thanks Marlene, she is a bit better at the moment, her eye has cleared a bit but she will probably still need the operation on her other eye. Very wet here today, hoping it will be a bit drier tomorrow for edin. They have the pandas at the zoo there that my (spanish daughter) lol would like to see but i think that would be too much walking for me, i seem to remember the zoo there being very hilly. I will be happy just relaxing at the hotel.

Hope you are feeling less sore, i am feeling very stiff again especially around my shoulders.

My hand is so painful still not sure what it is all about. I should go to see GP but I know there isn't anything they can do and it makes me feel like a time waster.
Going to bed soon with a hot water bottle.

Hi Marlene, Go to the GP Marlene! Don't leave it, it's up to them to decide whether it's important or not and there may be something going on. You have a serious condition so are never a time waster - well that's my view and my gps don't contradict me lol!
I will wait to hear you have made an appt (stern voice)

That made me feel better, at least I only feel miserable and don't look it. I am putting her on my best friends list lol.

Hi hope you don't mind me joining in. Hope you all had a great time over the festive season. Marlene hope your hands are feeling abit better and Rhona - isn't edinburgh getting worse for parking and the walking is no joke. I'm from there originally and loved the walk through the park one end to the other - last year it took me two trips to manage it then a day in bed to recover! wont' put me off when i go back up now. started humira treatment 3 months ago and it seems to be helping alot at the moment but feet still bit sore to walk on, thought tomorrow i might try my hands to see if i do any better that way but i'd break my neck trying.
happy new year you all and heres hoping to some more pain free days for you all xxx

Hi bsk, good to know you are ok. My hand is a little better to-day I have to say the swelling is less.I will have to learn to rest up the parts that are hurting me because I can see when my hand is saying help but not what is going on with my back and shoulder. I can only take a guess, so from now on when the pain is very bad to rest up rather than try to work through it.
I have had a rest to-day as well not done much at all.My daughter came she is a great help bless her. The week-end will be quiet as my other half will be working all day.

Well have a good week-end everyone. Any one doing anything exciting???

Glad to hear it is getting better Marlene. I did a pain management course and the theory is that you stop before the pain gets bad and have a break. It certainly does help and takes less time to recover.

Got no plans to speak of this weekend but might try and get out into the garden as things need doing there. Weather much improved at the moment!

Hi Girls, hope everyone is feeling well today, i am feeling very sore and stiff today so i am having a day at home taking it easy. I feel everything is hurting, especially my hands, shoulders and ankles. I think this is a result of all the stress last week, just goes to show how stress can affect us. I wish i didn't worry so much about things, i should try and make that my new year resolution.

It is dry here today and fairly mild for January, long may it last.

My daughter goes back to sunny spain on monday, that is the part i hate.

Anyway, hope you all have a painfree, enjoyable weekend.

The weather has been good to-day, I have been in the garden not doing anything just looking around. I am resting this hand of mine. I was making my bed and as I was pulling the duvet I lost my grip and punched my bad had, dont even ask air was blue I felt sick and it hasn't done it much good lol. I don't usually beat myself up!!!
I am now watching skating on ice tour, one of my guilty pleasures I love the programme. Glad mum likes also. Oh bless mum has just made a cuppa!!

Rhona I am sure all that stress is not helping you. Rhona I think we just can't help worrying especailly when our children are involved. Its normal.
Make the most of the week-end with your daughter.Make sure you book that trip to visit her this year. The warm weather will do you world of good take it from me.

Hi Willis & Marlene, At least we can get a laugh on here, that is a good one Willis, my daughters use one that is not so polite..LMAO i will leave you to work it out lol. Your are right about the dampness here Willis, it must be the worst place in the world for arthritis. Good for you getting a bike. My youngest daughter cycles to work every day and she works it the city centre, it's a 40min cycle each way but she says it's more reliable than the buses and it keeps her fit.

Marlene, my daughter in Spain is not married, none of them are (they must like the single life) she went to work there around 4 years ago as a teacher, she found teaching here too stressful, she loves it there, she works in an international school where the children are all taught in english, she has year 6 at the moment, she enjoys life there and of course the weather. she has a spanish boyfriend, he looks very handsome, so who knows, perhaps we will have a spanish wedding one day.

My daughter is not married either she loves the single life good for her. She works hard to pay her mortgage and pleases herself. Good for them all what I say, live life to the full.
I can imagine her life would be wonderful out in spain. Everything here is so stressfull, rush rush rush. Classrooms full to burstng. You must be so proud.
Your youngest sounds like fun fun cycles 40mins to work, she is right about the buses.
I worked it out out and its a good one to use.

I think you may be worrying a little about friday, it is only natural but all will be ok and soon it will be over. It doesn't help when you are in pain, as Marlene says if no better in a few days then you know you can increase then. Just try and relax and take things easy. (i should too) lol.

If you have been told by the optician that is it a cateract then i would be almost certain that it will be and they are easily treated bsk. You are going to one of the best hospitals in the world so try and relax or you will make yourself more sore. I know it's easier said than done.

I sent away for a pair of boots from clarks so they should be here any day now, i just hope they fit ok and they have an inside zip which should make it easier to get on/off and a rubber sole for grip.

I have my hot water bottle handy Marlene, sometimes it is comforting to hug it when i am shivery and sore. I hope i can sleep tonight, it's getting ridiculous, i am sleeping for 2 hours then up and down all night, if this keeps up i may have to ask for sleeping tablets and i don't want to start them.

Hi Girls,

It is very foggy here today and absolutely freezing. I think i will be staying indoors today.

I slept slighly better last night, i wakened at 4am which wasn't too bad for me. I had my dog sleeping in my bedroom last night, she hasn't been too well lately, i don't know if it's just old age and when she came in and flopped on the floor beside my bed i didn't have the heart to put her out, she always sleeps in her own bed in the hall so don't know why she came in last night. I will consider sleeping pills if things don't improve, i just feel i take so many pills already. When i think back to before i had this i would seldom put a pill in my mouth, just shows how things can change.

That's good that your pain is a bit better Marlene.

As for sleeping pills that would of been totally off limits, I also worry but what can we do. I have blood tests to check liver and kidney function so my gp does keep watch over things.
You are right when you say how things change but thank God for those pills.
Aww poor doggie, maybe she was just in need of a bit of fuss, my dog has her own bed on the landing. Rhona do you think she may of picked up you were feeling a bit low. When I am unwell my dog will lay by my bed all day. They are so loyal.

Hi Lynn, That's a shame that you are going through all that. I had hoped that you were getting a wee break from it all. You are better getting checked out though. Perhaps it's a side effect to your painkillers or the disease itself. I get fed up with all the new symtoms i get and it can change from day to day. Try and stay positive, we are all thinking of you.

Hi Marlene, I think my dog is a bit unsettled just now, her hearing is very bad, she is almost deaf and she has got very slow and she's had a wee bit of a cough. If she is any worse tomorrow i will take her to the vet but she panics when we go there and he has to muzzle her. You are right they are very sensitive to things, i always took her walks and when i got really bad last year i couldn't do it and that's when things started to go wrong with her, although she is getting old.

Hi Girls, well, I have got a cataract, albeit a very small one but also depth of field problem which is making it worse. I've now been referred to the cataract clinic - which is where I thought I was going today - but no , that was the screening clinic. So the wait goes on. Nothing sinister though, which is a good thing. Revlieved it's over.

Hi bsk, You will be relieved it's over and now you know for sure that there is nothing too serious wrong.

I haven't been across the door today, for some reason i feel quite down, i don't know why, well nothing that's different from the usual. I sometimes get days like this when i can't be bothered with anything. I would be no company for anyone.

My dog seems a little better today she still has her appetite anyway and she was back in her own bed last night (her choice) lol.

Hope you all have a painfree weekend.

In any case, it is bitterly cold out there so staying tucked up at home is prob a good thing. Have you got any dvds you want to watch, or some nice music to listen to? sSometimes works for me.

Rhona, sorry you feel so down, it does catch up with us the pain and the poor quality of sleep and of course the worry you had with your daughter over christmas. bsk is right be nice to yourself curl up and watch tv or read a book.
I am curled up on the sofa again to-night, I am doing what bsk said and resting more.

New hairdresser so could be interesting. My usual one won't cut my hair any shorter and the last few cuts have not been good. I feel disloyal but it's time for a change.

Joints terrible tonight, my wrist is the worst and is painful even with a splint on. Steroids keeping me awake but haven't helped the pain yet.

Glad to hear that you had an enjoyable night bsk. I hope you are pleased with the new hairdresser. I was in a similar position. The girl i went to was good at the start but i felt she wasn't really listening to what i asked for and she always cut it too short, i have quite a long hairline and i don't like it cut above that and she continued to do it. I have tried a few since but haven't been totally satisfied so i don't know where i will go for my next haircut and it is about due.

I hope your wrist settles down the steroids should kick in shortly. My hand looks so swollen, it is sore when i try to straighten it.

I hope your jaw is ok Marlene, it is horrible when the jaw is affected. Sometimes it can be coming from your teeth, might be worth getting a check-up just in case, i often think i have toothache when in fact it is my jaw but my dentist understands now and checks it out anyway, his mother had r/a and he is very understandable.

I looked out my window and i see some white patches on the grass, it was like sleet earlier no doubt it will turn to snow later in the day.

Are you ok Lynn?

Hi Rhona, not entirely sure about the hair cut. He did cut it short as I wanted but too blunt. Might look better when it's grown out a bit. He has made it look thick though, which my last one couldn't manage to do!

Sorry your hands are swollen. Aren't you due for another steroid shot about now? Might be worth having the discussion with your rheumy.

We are waiting for snow tomorrow. It wasn't quite so bitter out today by joints still rubbish - having a bit of a rest today.

Jaw pain is horrible, it can come from your neck too. I went a bought a decent orthopaedic pillow a couple of weeks ago as neck and jaw very painful. Worth every penny!

glad you are happy with the cut and it makes you feel better when your hair looks good. I am getting it cut and maybe the roots the grey is showing a bit. i am considering letting the grey take is course, i just hate the thought of growing out the brown.my hairdresser suggested i tone it down with more highlights. i am a bit old at 61 for loads of highlight.

I took her to the vet and he thinks it could be kennel cough that she has, he said there is a lot of it going about just now. He has given her antibiotics and told me to buy her a cough bottle from the chemist, i got her a childrens one lol. He said if she still has the cough in a week or so then to take her back as there could be a couple of other things it could be and they would x-ray her. I hope he's right although i don't know how she could get kennel cough as she doesn't mix with other dogs, perhaps meets a few at the park now and again.

Hi Girls,

It is freezing cold here too but no snow as yet.

I had to call the vet out to my dog yesterday as she couldn't get up off the floor. The girl that called was excellent she gave her a steroid injection and thinks that she has hurt herself trying to get off the wooden floor. We had to go and get a large carpet runner yesterday and cut it to sit on places where she walks the vet said if she doesn't pick up we would have to think about getting her put to sleep but thankfully today she is so much better and walking again. I guess dogs are just like people, they can get the same problems.

My daughter manages the best she can bsk, although she hasn't been able to drive since the last bleed at xmas.

OH Marlene what lovely news, it sounds idyllic, that must have been quite an unheavel but well worth it. I am sure your pain levels will settle a bit now. I hope you will all be very happy. Was it ready to walk into, this isn't the time of year for decorating anyway.

We are going to see my daughter in Spain next week, just for 6 days. I thought it might help to take my daughter's mind off things for a bit. We have booked a hotel as the three of us are going, my other daughter is going to look after my dog, i feel a bit guilty leaving her when she hasn't been too well although my daughter loves her to bits but she is out working all day.

I am thinking i might see if i can get a steroid injection before i go as my hands etc are still sore.

Take care xx

Hi bsk, I have moved to hertforshire. Very pretty village, at the bottom of my lane is a lake full of swans and ducks. It will be a lovely place to sit in the summer. I hope you get some answers at your appoinment tomorrow. It is late hope they don't keep you hanging around.

Rhona so glad to hear you are off to Spain I hope you love it there and return more often. You will find a different pace of life and spend your time there chilling. You are right stress is so bad for us. I was stressed to the limit before we moved and I know it wasn't helping me.
I am sure your daughter will spoil your dog while you are away. I know what is like leaving them but you need to take some time out.

oh the joys of moving house, change of address is the worst!

Saw my rheumy, such a lovely man but he is retiring in a few months :( He's handing my over to a doctor who is at the cutting edge of research, apparently. That's got to be good.

He's put up my steroids as he says, on balance, it is better if I am in less pain and can do more. What I thought was hip pain is bursitis and inflammatory in nature so steroid will help that as well. Had a long chat and I think I'm doing too much. Need to get a better balance. Not easy as we know. Hey ho.

Retail therapy sounds good Marlene, you will soon have it as your own little palace. It will be like being on your holidays for a wee while.

Good that your appointment went well bsk, i usually have to rest in between doing things. I went out yesterday but stayed in and rested my knee today, i am hoping it settles down. I would like to be able to do more but my joints object so i now try and listen to by body, well sometimes!

My dog seems so much better now, long may it last, great things those steroids bks lol.

I had my chiropodist in tonight, what a difference having someone doing them for me, i am hoping i will manage to paint them myself lol.

Hopefully once you start the steroids bsk your hip will settle. Perhaps walking in the snow has put strain on it. Try and rest when you can.

I will see how i feel tomorrow as my knee is still not right and i have pain in my feet and hands and not sure what would benefit most. If i thought i could manage without it then i would leave it as i have hospital in 2 weeks. We go on tuesday bsk. I have the dentist at 9.30 in the morning, i was flossing my teeth and think i have pulled a bit filling out. I am wondering if the drugs are making my teeth weaker.

I hope so Rhona.

I'm always pulling bits of filling out and put it down to them being old fillings which were always going to go at some point.

Why not go for a systemic jab? It will make it so much easier for your to travel and won't affect your appointment. If you have it this week it will have kicked in by the time you leave. My knee is not right either and is really throbbing tonight. Roll on tomorrow morning for more drugs!

I took your advice bsk and called this morning when i got back from the dentist so i have appointment for tomorrow morning. I do feel i need it and can't wait to get it as my hands and wrists are so sore this morning. I actually put down for assistance at the airport when i booked the flight as i never know how i am going to be and we are flying with ryanair and easijet coming home and quite often you have to get a bus to the plane but wishing now i had just booked a seat with extra leg room, i am hoping now i won't need it if i get the jab and i think i would be embarassed getting help.

I hope you are feeling a bit better today. It is not so cold here this morning but i think we have rain due soon, i would rather have the cold than the rain.

How are you settling in to your new home Marlene?

Pleased to hear that Rhona. You won't regret it.

Don't feel embarrassed about using assistance. Look at it this way - if you don't put strain on your joints at the airport, you will enjoy your holiday more. I always have assistance, even on the trains. It makes a massive difference and takes a lot of stress out of travelling. Last time I travelled they changed the departure gate 3 times! I couldn't have possibly managed that. Use it, it's there for you.

Joints not good today. Upped steroids this morning so will wait for them to kick in. Going to phone rheumy nurse about drugs today as not sure keeping them out of the fridge is a good idea and wondering if they are working as well.
take care.

Take it easy today if your joints are sore the steroids should kick in soon. I am sitting with a blanket round my shoulders as feeling sore and stiff this morning.

Hi Rhona, yes, it's changed now. You can keep the at room temp for up to 28 days. I forgot to tell you I switched off my fridge by mistake so had to call the out of hours nurse. I spoke to my usual one this morning and she confirmed that is ok. Certainly makes life a lot easier if you are travelling.

It is cold here to-day as well. My garden is enormous I didn't realise how big it was. It is full of shrubs and a large fish pond. We look out onto farm land so it is peaceful and I am hopeful this will do me good.

Hi Marlene, had a very lazy day, just coffee with a friend and pottering around trying to sort a few things out at home.

My mum was the best at planning gardens, she could just do it in one look! Are you going to have some fruit trees if you have space - which sounds as if you do lol!

My friend is still on life support but improving very slowly. Think she is going to be in hospital for quite some time.

Take care xx

Hi Bsk, glad you had a restfull day I am going to take time out on Tuesday window shopping with my daughter.
I was thinking a cherry blossom tree or a magnolia. Fruit trees is something we are thinking about. My Dad was an avid gardener and I think that is where my passion comes from.
Oh dear! I am so sorry about your friend bless her. It is good she is slowly improving as it can be amazing when they just suddenly turn that corner to good health again I am sending my thoughts of love to her.
Bsk take care xxxx

Hi Marlene, I love both cherry tree and magnolia. Both were in a house of my childhood and I have a weeping Japanese cherry in my garden. It is very graceful and stunning when the blossom is out. I've wanted a magnolia for years. Maybe this is the year lol!

Had coffee out with a friend today which was very nice, but still feel under the weather. Don't know what is going on. Just lying low with this cold weather.

Have fun shopping on Tues if we don't speak before.

Hi Marlene, haven't been out yet but it a beautiful sunny day here.

Yes, you might be right about the stress about my friend, her name is Heather btw. She's improving slowly daily but will be in hospital for a quite a while yet and I think they are going to move her to a specialist ward at another hospital. Haven't been to see her yet as she is so ill but hope to go at some point, depending how she is getting on.

i've also got a very sore throat but think it is oral thrush as can see some white spots but no temperature. Debating whether to get dr to look at it or leave for another day. hmmmm!

How are you doing in your new home? Have your joints recovered from the move?
take care xxx

Lets hope if Heather (my daughter-in-laws name) is moved to a specialist hspt she will recover faster.
It is sunny here but so cold.
They say yoghurt held in the mouth is good for thrush ?? I had that after anti-biotic injections my mouth was so sore so I sympathise with you. Your chemist may be able to help.
We are getting there slowly but I am so happy here. My joints are not so bad to-day rested up yesterday I had to it was all too much. To-day going shopping so that will help as I take it slowly when out lots of coffee breaks LOL.
The weeping Japanese cherry sounds lovely I will google later.
My mum-in-law has a beautiful Magnolia. I have been planning what to do, we are going to remove some of the conifer trees not the prettiest trees and they are far to big. I better go and get my glad rags on lol.
keep warm talk later let you know if I buy anything. xxx

Did you buy anything Marlene? Lovely day for being out and about, if a little cold.

I have got oral thrush, gp diagnosed over the phone and left a script for me. Feeling much better already. That's the fourth time I've been there in a week!

My friend is moving hospitals to one near metomorrow. She has more damage than they hoped but it's good she's well enough to be moved. Still not able to go and see her yet.

Just seen the forecast, going to be colder tomorrow. Oh well, it is February after all!
Take care Marlene. xx

Hi Bsk, I did buy some polyanthus (spelling) for my planters by the front door. Along with some paint for the shed door, a bit previous I know. All on the list to do!!
Oral thrush is horrible glad you are feeling better. Well four times in a week shocker LOL I guess we should be getting some return for our taxes LOL.
Oh glad your friend will be nearer and it will be good when you can see her. Has your friend had a stroke if you don't mind me asking BLESS HER my thoughts go to her every time I come on the forum.

It was freezing here yesterday and snowed in the afternnon which was followed by rain. The sun was shining when I went out. All the seasons in one day. It is always cold in Feb I was born at the end of the month and my mum always remembers the great big icicles hanging and having to keep the coal fires burning to keep her new bundle warm.
Would you believe we are having a new heating system fitted from Oil to electric so only have had our log burner going so the house is quite cold. Finishing to-day so hooray for some heat to-night upstairs. My poor mum but nothing puts her out she always says I have been through worse. Yes she has a war!!!!
Well off to wickes to buy a new shower with my daughter.
Talk later and keep warm xxx

Hi Marlene, bought some myself the other day! Just can't seem to get around to planting them lol! Keep looking at the garden but it is so cold.

My throat vastly improved this morning. Amazing how quickly the drugs work. None of that messing about with yoghurt lol!

My friend (who is in her 40s) had pancreatitis which went septic. So unexpected and a shock for everyone. I hope she makes a full recovery in time but she is in the best place for treatment - your old hospital! I''ll be able to visit soon i hope.

Enjoy your heating. Yes, those who went through the war years are tough!! My granny never stopped talking about rationing. I think she like it on some level- mind you, she was a dreadful cook. Actually both my grannies were. Vegetables SOAKED for 24 hours then boiled into oblivion. Glutinous stews that all looked the same and stodgy puddings. Amazing that one lived to 93 and the other 83 - both smoked as well though the older one gave up in her 50s!
They were another species!

take care, stay warm. xxx
