Hi Willliam, Some people have a rhuematoid factor and never develop arthritis and some people with r/a don't have the r/f. r/a doesn't usually affect the lower back, especially at the beginning and your ESR (inflammation) in blood would have been high if you had it. Try not to worry about it.

hi William , I have had RA since 1996 & one thing my Rheumatoligist told me is you dont get RA in your back so dont think your back problem is linked to RA as what Rhona said , not everyone with RF develops RA , signs are redness, heat & swelling in joints & blood test to show inflammation so dont worry to much

Hi Colin, i've got OA in my spine, but i have aching hands, not sure if they're swollen or not but they feel bigger! My niece whos a GP suggested to have a blood test to test for other inflamatory probs. Is RA in your hands common, a bit new to all this, wasn't sure if it was a side effect from the drugs but my doc says no

hi Chrissy , missed your post , think your niece is right about the blood test , will show up if any of the inflamatory markes are up , dont think its because of your drugs so thats why think a blood test would be good hi william , having high RF levels dont always mean you have RA , mine was when they first checked but had redness & heat in a joint which is why they done the blood test pleased they refered you but if your condition worsens I would try to get a quicker appointment , btw high RF levels is not because of height or motabilism but if it is RA you will need Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) to stop joint damage , check out the link section at top of the page , some have help lines & they have a lot of good information on RA
