Subject: new to Osteoarthritis - help!

Hi all, diagnosed with Osteoarthritis a couple of months ago, have it in my lower spine, quite degraded in L5 vertebrae and below, so most movement hurts. Was started on Naproxen, but didn't find it effective so give Dihydrocodiene 120mg twice a day. its still not great. My question is should i have given Naproxen longer, whats everyones view on the medication for this arthitis?

Hi Chrissy, I am a fellow OA sufferer. I take Tramadol and Co-Dydramol. There isn't an awful lot out there only combinations of pain killers and anti-inflams.
Try hot water bottles on the painful areas and try to keep mobile.
Take Care and we are all here for you.

Hi Chrissy,
as Marlene said, there's not a lot out there for osteoarthritis. You could try a heat pad or why not try out a Tens. They can be very helpful. I use one on my arthritis in my neck, and it helps.
Also, try checking on your mattress. If it's soft a firmer one might help.

Cheers guys, thanks for responding. Sat with my hot water bottle on my back as we speak ! My niece whos a GP suggested lower Codeine and Naproxen, that will get rid of some of the constipation aswell. Have any of you had problems with your hands? My hands really ache, morning and rest of day. Niece says to have a blood test, test for other inflammatory probs.

HI Marlene, are tramadol anti inflams then? I've got co-dydramol as well as a backup, but can't say they really help.

Hi Chriss, no they do not have anti inflams, they are just a strong painkiller. I have them to add to co-dydramol when the pain is just too much.
Hand pains go along with OA, my hands at the present time are painful and swollen.
Try to keep your hands warm. There isn't much point in having bloods done unless of course you have not been checked for RA or PA.
Have you had CT or MRI scans done?
Take care

No, only initial x-ray. I asked my doc about my hands, asked him if he knew of pills side effects and he said no - i haven't got swollen knuckles, they just ache but are getting worse. will need to speak to him again hopefully monday. Had a bad morning today, had to take extra painkillers just to get out of bed. is there a time when you're not in pain...a remission period at all...need some hope!

I do have remission from bad pain, usually when the warm weather is here. Winter is a bad time for us all.
You will learn to cope and not to do things that make your pain worse.
If you want to know about side effects of pill google them. What pills do you take that you think may be causing side effects?
Chrissy it is a hard thing to deal with but hang in there.
Take Care xx

I've spent 46 years not taking anything and my body is now bombarded with codeine, co-dydramol AND...HRT tablets for the hot flushes... all in the same month..grrr! I'm normally a happy girlie who doesn't let anything get me down. But i spent 2 years losing 5 stone and getting fit with 26 mile power walks (60 miles a week) and zumba 4 times a week. Just when you think life is good.....BAM. can't move and put 2 stone back on in 2012. Now.. I will defeat this so, i'll be starting to lose the weight from sat and trying to walk again, not long distances 4-6 miles and trying to swim 2-3 times a week. Its easy to write this down, i was going to start this morning but then i couldn't get out of bed!! thanks for your kind words and encouragement :)

Subject: new to Osteoarthritis - update

Hi all, since my medication change - 60mg Codeine and 500mg Naproxen, my pain in my spine has got a lot better. Still have my bad twinges but on the whole my back just aches - which i can cope with. Also less codeine means my insides are working better. Still have questions about my aching hands - had an xray and blood test - normal, any suggestions? should i get an MRI instead?

they do a specialised CT scan for showing OA in all joints. I can't remember what it is called, but I had a hand scan received an injection went for lunch came back two hours later had a full body ct scan. I could see on the computer bright white stars showing on all affected joints. Speak to your GP. Good Luck
