I got a serious infection in replacement hip and was hospitalised for two months. Am still on antibiotics probably for life and now have osteoarthritis in that (right) hip and leg. Any suggestions on what to take for pain relief?

That sounds pretty serious. I don't know what to suggest for pain but your gP should help. You could try a pain clinic or a pain management course or expert patients course for pain. They are very good.

Hi Shirley, I am surprised your GP has not given you proper pain relief. For OA I take a combination of Tramadol and Co-Dyramol both are prescription only. You should have a serious chat with your GP.I hope you get some resolution sooner rather than later. Take Care.

Hi Shirley I have had steroid injections in Elbow Shoulders and wrist for OA. They do help for a while. I found the shoulder responded better than the others. Everyone is different. The pain can be really bad to say the least. I find a hot water bottle and a good book or film helps to take my mind off of it. Painkillers help but I try not to take too many. I have learned to live with it. I get on with everything and if I do need help I ask for it. If you don't ask friends and family they will assume you are coping well. Nothing wrong in saying this is hard can you lend a hand. (took me a long time to learn this) When I need to rest I do. I find this forum so helpful in all ways. Support is great. Take Care and keep your chin up. X

Infections & the bacteria can hide underneath the plates, screws etc of replacement joints etc - so getting the hip out & cleaning the area should help.. I contracted a severe infection when I had the plates & screws in & the antibiotics couldn't reach that area until I got the hardware out. The surgeons cleaned the area & after a further 10 days of antibiotics I have never had another infection. Good luck

Hi Rhonda You can ask your Consultant to ask your GP to perscribe Probiotics for you if not you can get UDO's Choice probiotics from independent health food shops and take 2 daily with food. Antibiotics ruin your immune system. Look on the BBC's page where Dr Mike Porter interviewed Professor Ben Stig Mark about probiotics before and after surgery. Then ask your GP about taking Citrate Magnesium for Osteoproses Avoid Dairy and Calcium suppliment which turns you to stone Warm regards

Hi everyone Dr has now prescribed one or two tramadol four times a day plus 2 co-codomol 4 times a day for pain = still having regular blood tests and at the moment the 1000 mg flucloxacillin I am taking 4 times a day is keeping the infection I got in my replacement hip two and a half years ago is under control but will never be cured. Has anyone else contracted this infection?
