Subject: leflunomide

Hi Everyone.

I am due to start this drug Leflunimode, but am very concerned about the toxity of it. If someone wanted to get pregnant they need to avoid conception until 2 years from stopping the meds. Has anyone tried this DMARD has it helped you enough to make you feel better and carry on taking it without much or any of the side effects.

Thanks PPL

Hi Suz, I take leflunomide and have done for about 12 years. I haven't had any side effects and have found it an effective drug. It worked well for me for about 8 years and I was able to reduce my steroids while on it. I am now also on humira and back on methotrexate. I also take diclofenac at the moment for swelling in various joints. In terms of the pregnancy thing you do have to be off it for two years before conception, but I'm not worried about that as I have no plans for pregnancy. Hope this helps.

Hi Suz,
I too tried this earlier this year, but it did not suit me. I got high blood pressure, something which I have never had, and high liver readings from my monthly blood tests.
I am back on methotrexate, no side effects, but arthritis is flaring up badly.
Seems we are all different in tolerating drugs and its trial and error till we get a suitable one.
Hope it goes well for you! Emm

Thank you for your responses.

I am worried about taking it but looks like I got no choice, you guys had to take it so who am to drop out without trying but im still so nervous cos it seems so toxic.

I had rituximab earlier in summer it helped somewhat but not as much as my hands look really out of shape some days and swollen ankles.

Oh god help us. Maybe il have to give it try.

Thanks again.
