Subject: NSAID which one?

I would like to know which anti-inflams' you all find effective, I tried Celebrex but was told to stop these at my recent hospital visit with my knee problem. Consultant said he would write to my GP about another NSAID. As yet GP has not received anything. Also painkillers.
At present I am only taking paracetamol.
Methotrexate and prednisalone are my main treatment, but my RA is not under control at all.
I can't be prescribed 'biologicals' because of chest probs.
Are there any NSAIDs that have dramatic results?
All responses greatly appreciated. X

I've taken Ibuprofen, Meloxicam and Naproxen. They helped, but not dramatically. The last NSAID i took was Naproxen. My rheumatologist took me off them saying they did not like people being on them long term. My GP told me when i went to see her about a recurring sore throat, that Naproxen can make infections linger.

I was given a prescription for Co-codemol instead, but i hate taking them as they make so constipated. Even with taking laxatives. I take Paracetamol instead.

Hi Emm, If it's just now and again perhaps ibruprofen would help although they can cause stomach problems. I was on naproxen and given a stomach protector with them but my feet swelled up, i eventually discovered it was the stomach protectors that were causing the problem so i don't take anti inflammatorys anymore, just paracetamol. I think you should speak to the hospital to see what else they can offer you. Have you tried plaquenil and sulphasalazine? I hope you get something to help as it is wearing having continuous pain.
Good luck x

Hi Emm I take a NSAID called Arcoxia, I believe this is a more expensive type, so it's not always offered, but it helps protect the stomach. I have some issues with my stomach & didn't get on with Naproxen. Also taking Planquenil & prednisolone.
Good luck

When I first saw my consultant he prescribed me Brufen Retard, it is a slow release anti inflammatory drug. The dose is 2 x 800mg a day. It does say on the instructions to take two at once but I was told to take one in a morning and one at tea time. Normal pain relief takes it's time to work, gets to a peak and then starts to dwindle away, you then take another one and the process starts again. With this drug being slow release you always get a constant level in your system. I also take a stomach protector. Have been taking it since May 08 and (touch wood) no problems yet. You are not suppose to take any anti inflammatory drug if you are taking oral steroids.

Paula, it worries me slightly that you mention you shouldn't take anti inflammatory's whilst taking oral steroids, as I am!! Do you think I should speak to my Dr about this & do you have any information about why?

Thanks
Nicola

It's what my specialist nurse told me to do. At then moment I am taking oral steroids and paracetamols. I sometimes think that different consultants have different ideas on what to take with what. The best thing to do is to check at your pharmacist, they have a book that tells about drug interaction. When I had MTX added the pharmacist told me that the computer (Boots do all of my drugs so they have a record of what I take) flagged up that MTX should not be taken with anti inflammatories, I asked my specialist nurse about it and she said the benefits out weighed the risks.

Hi, I took oral steroids and diclofenac for years. I am also currently on diclofenac, methotrexate and leflunomide. My Nan was told she couldn't take nsaids because she had asthma. Maybe you haven't been prescribed them because of your chest problems.
