Subject: MSM

Hello I am a new member, was diagnosed with OA 18months ago, started off with pain killers, ok for hands but didn't help with my big toe, asked about other pain relief and have had 3 steroid injections, last one lasted 6 months, this one needs doing again because its hard to get to the exact spot. So I came across this forum and read about something called MSM that worked for a patient, what is it,can we get it in Britain?

If you put MSM into the search box above you will find some things out about it. I have never heard of it either but i see some people have written about it.

I'm pretty sure this is the supplement i tried a few years ago. It came in a powder. It didn't do much for me, but then i have Lupus/ra rather than OA. It may work better for OA. For the past year i've been taking low dose naltrexone. It has done wonders for me. It is not a supplement, it has to be prescibed by a doctor. Usually a private one. Again i don't know if it will help OA, but it does help autoimmune diseases.

Thanks for your replies, went on the website and found it online, but was not sure about buying something new online, so I went to Holland and Barrett and they sell it there, at the moment you get the second bottle for 1p BONUS! So I am trying it out, will give it a month and let you know how it goes.

Well it's been a month since I started MSM and as promised I am giving an update, but its inconclusive. I have taken one three times a day with meals, I didn't have the injection redone as it settled down after a couple of days, the pain has been very slight in the last month, with the occasional stabbing pain, not been able to do my Zumba class with the usual enthusiasm, and sticking to the flat boots for now. The weather doesnt help. So I have no proof they are doing good, but I feel they are keeping the pain down a lot. I will keep on taking them and see when the better weather comes if I can be pain free and as active as usual.

Hi Rowantree

MSM is something I have researched before - and found this

MSM (natural solvent that at the correct dose interferes with the adhesion of bacteria biofilms to gut surfaces; makes cell membranes more permeable to nutrients.)

Effectively it is supposed to make it difficult for bacteria to adhere to the gut wall - other similar strategies discussed here.

There are also natural antibiotics to reduce or compete against the bacteria - turmeric, probiotics, boswellia.
