Subject: Newly diagnosed. Does this sound like a flare?

I have been at home since mid-March with Fibro and can recognise symptoms, and flares etc. Had an op on lower hernia recently and recovering from that. But the last two days have been dreadful! I Yesterday I awoke with severe pain and every movement hurt. Turning took so much effort and energy from me. I felt particularly weak and spent the whole day in bed, just sleeping. Today was the same waking with stiffness and extreme pain. Managed to get up and hubby helped with shower. Stiffness eased off a bit. Feel a bit better but arm is weak and writing this is difficult. My question is: does this sound like a flare? It is definitely not Fibro related and I am confused and depressed at the way my body seems to be coming up with new symptoms . Can anyone advise me? Thx Vxx

It does sound like a flare. I used to experience similar symptoms when I'm in a severe flare of my ra. You should probably contact your rheumatology nurse and see if they can get you in clinic. Good luck.

Thanks. I will raise this with my Rheumy but not until 3Dec when he will be reviewing lots of other stuff. At least I will now be able to distinguish between Fibro and Arthritis flares!

So much is happening have to get past Denial stage and accept will no longer be able to work.

You can contact the hospital and they can get you in earlier, especially as it is so bad at the moment. I had my last bad flare in Dec 2010 and I contacted my hospital and they fit me in between Christmas and New year. Once they have it under control you may be able to work again. I still work full time. Take care. X

After having surgery anything that seems a bit strange and you are unsure of should be reported back to surgeons secretary for him to call.
This is a major surgery and you should never ignore any changes in yourself as bsk advises don't leave it!!!!!!!

Hi Veronica, I agree with the others, you should call the hospital, after having an operation it is important that you get checked out, better safe than sorry. x

Thanks for all your support. Have only just seen the last messages as I seem to have come through yet another flare,

My latest was brought on by my first - gentle - physio session. Only the previous day I went for a long 3km walk with hubby. I could not move nor breathe for the pain following my physio session. The problem is I have been told not to travel as a passenger in a car for 6 weeks (nor drive for 4) which is why I am waiting. You are right though and I will at least call the Rheumy and see what he suggests. Have another physio session tomorrow and will tell her about my reaction to the treatment before we start. Apart from the excruciating pain, this is all quite scary.

Hi Veronica, you are right it is all scary 3KM seems a long walk to be doing so soon. Try not to overdo things, things inside are not as healed as outside. The muscles take a long time to repair. I was told after my back surgery it takes a good year for all of the inside to be repaired. I would make sure your physio team know exactly what happened. You take care and I wish you well.

From: Veronica Thanks Marlene. What you say makes sense. Nothing much much was explained to me at all. My French is fine, but mother tongue is always best if poss when talking health issues. Surprised it takes a year but it was a massive op. Will rein myself in!

I don't know if you had a chance to speak to your surgeon, but I was lucky enough to be in the next bed to a patient he came to talk to. He asked how I was doing and explained exactly what he had done. He also told me to walk before I run and take it very easy for a full year. So I just did a small amount of extra things each week. My biggest thing was walking and still is if I overdo it I pay the price. I had my surgery three years ago next month. We have to realise that after such surgery we will be left with a small amount of weakness.
I do hope you get well slowly but surely as I said you take Care x
