Subject: Gutted

Hi my names Angela I just found out last week I have arthritis in both hips and pelvis. It came as a bit of a shock as I'd only gone to the doctors to get my leg checked out because I thought id strained a muscleIm very active and love going running however it seems not no more I'm absolutely gutted I love been outside early morning it makes me feel good it gets rid of my stress and sets me up for the day.I've been reading up exercises I can do but none can compare. What I want to know is there anyone else in the same situation and how do you deal with it.I'm sorry if I show that I'm feeling sorry for myself im just absolutely devastatedIm 44years old and a none smoker I always thought you got things like arthrites in your 70s not my age.

Hi Angela, I have arthritis in all my joints and have done since the age of 14. The drugs available now are very good and the disease can be very well controlled. I still exercise, I do the cross trainer and cycle. Your doctor should be able to advise you of the kinds of exercise you can and cannot do. Swimming is meant to be very good as the water supports your weight. A morning swim could be a good replacement for a morning run. I won't tell you life can carry on as normal, you do have to make adjustments. It took a long time to get my RA under control and I've had both my hips replaced. I'm 31. I hope your rheumatologist gets you on the right cocktail of drugs to help you as soon as possible. In the meantime you can come on here and tell other people, who understand what you're going through, how you feel etc. Good luck.

Is walking out of the picture too? If not, it might be a good substitute for the time being?
Splash out on some really good walking boots. Decent ones will keep your ankle well supported and in turn looks after your knees and hips. Good ones will also promote a good walking style which reduces pressure on your joints. I have a pair of brasher boots, with them on I can walk for miles, without them I am limping after approx one mile. They are expensive initially but mine are now in there 7th year of usage and look like they might last another 7!
It won't get your heart pumping as much as running has but you can still get outside, take the air and enjoy the view!
Good luck

Hi Angela the same thing happened to me last year and I have now just had a hip replacement but still having problems with pelvis and knees. I to was a walker and cyclist, I still try to walk as often as I can but only for short periods of time and it is very painful. The main thing for me was admitting that there is only so much you can do and make the most of it, like Clare says walk or if your up to it cycle. I've just bought a really good excercise bike and am determind that by this time next year I'll be back in the saddle. (proper bike that is)
