Subject: Polymialgia. What is it?

Hi
My Dad has had a lot of problems with Polymialgia over the last 5 years, and after chatting to other relatives, I have found out that 4 out of 5 of my aunts also suffer from it. I have recently heard that it's connected to arthritis. Is this right? What exactly is it? And is it hereditry? I mean, do I have this to look forward to in the future? I already suffer from arthritis in my wrist joints.
If anyone has any information I would love to hear it.

Hi Debby,

You can download a booklet about it from the ARC website
http://www.arc.org.uk/about_arth/booklets/6032/6032.htm

You also might want to have a look at the Polymialgia Rheumatica threads on the Arthritis Care-sw website's message board as there are loads of posts from people who have this condition.

I think it is one of those very variable illnesses - some people get it really badly and have to take a lot of steroids to deal with the pain and stiffness and others get it only mildly. The good news is it is only supposed to last for about 3 - 5 years and then go away leaving no lasting damage (I'm not sure this is always the case though)...

It may run in families I'm not sure, but even if it does it doesn't mean you will definately get it.

I hope your dad feels better soon.
